OIL LEAK FROM REAR OF TRANSFER CASE (SERVICE PROCEDURE)

Model and Year: 1990 L VANS

Some 1990 L vans may exhibit a small oil leak from the rear of the transfer case when parked on an inclined surface with the front of the vehicle higher than the rear.

To correct, it is necessary to clean the hole at the rear of the yoke and the area around the hole using a rag and solvent suitable for oil residue removal. Using a thin flat applicator, such as a tongue depressor or similar object, pack enough silicone sealer into the hole at the rear of the yoke to seal the hole. GM Part Number 1052917 or equivalent silicone sealer may be used. REMOVAL OF THE DRIVE SHAFT SHOULD NOT BE NECESSARY. Vehicles built after the following VIN breakpoint have a redesigned yoke that eliminates the hole:

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
