- Remove the flywheel inspection plate.
- Inspect the flywheel for signs of wear such as:
• | Chipped or missing gear teeth. |
- Replace the flywheel if necessary.
- If the starter whines after the engine is turned ON perform the
following steps:
4.1. | Shim the starter away from the flywheel. |
4.2. | Add the long shims, one at a time, until the noise stops. |
4.3. | Do not exceed two shims. |
- If the starter whines during cranking,
perform the following steps:
5.1. | Shim the starter toward the flywheel. |
5.2. | Add the short shims between the outboard starter mounting pad
and the engine mount until the noise stops. |
5.3. | Do not add more than four shims. |
- Tighten the starter mounting bolts when shimming is complete.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 43 N·m (32 lb ft).
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
