Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement Left Side

Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  2. Remove the engine cover. Refer to SECTION 10A4.
  3. Remove the air cleaner box and the intake duct. Refer to Air Cleaner in Engine Controls.
  4. Remove the PCV valve and the upper oil fill tube.
  5. Remove the accessory drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  6. Remove the A/C compressor with bracket and slide forward. Refer to SECTION 1B.
  7. Remove the EGR tube.
  8. Remove the spark plug wires. Refer to Spark Plug Wires Not Operating Properly in Engine Electrical.

  9. Object Number: 4041  Size: SH
  10. Remove the valve rocker arm cover bolts.

  11. Object Number: 4042  Size: SH
  12. Remove the valve rocker arm cover and gasket.
  13. Clean all traces of old gasket from the valve rocker arm cover and cylinder head.
  14. Inspect the valve rocker arm cover sealing surface for distortion and damage. Replace the valve rocker arm cover if necessary.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 4042  Size: SH
  1. Install the valve rocker arm cover and new gasket.

  2. Object Number: 4041  Size: SH
  3. Install the valve rocker arm cover bolts.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the valve rocker arm cover bolts to 12 N·m (106 lb in).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Install the spark plug wires. Refer to Spark Plug Wires Not Operating Properly in Engine Electrical.
  6. Install the EGR tube.
  7. Install the A/C compressor with bracket and slide forward. Refer to SECTION 1B.
  8. Install the accessory drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  9. Install the PCV valve and the upper oil fill tube.
  10. Install the air cleaner box and the intake duct. Refer to Air Cleaner in Engine Controls.
  11. Install the engine cover. Refer to SECTION 10A4.
  12. Connect the negative battery cable.

Removal Procedure

  5. Remove the purge solenoid and bracket. Refer to EVAP Canister Purge Solenoid in Engine Controls.
  6. Remove the wiring harness at the valve rocker arm cover, including the bracket.

  8. Remove the valve rocker arm cover bolts.

  9. Object Number: 4042  Size: SH
  10. Remove the valve rocker arm cover and gasket.
  11. Clean all traces of old gasket from the valve rocker arm cover and cylinder head.
  12. Inspect the valve rocker arm cover sealing surface for distortion and damage. Replace the valve rocker arm cover if necessary.

  1. Install the valve rocker arm cover and new gasket.

  2. Object Number: 4041  Size: SH
  3. Install the valve rocker arm cover bolts.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the valve rocker arm cover bolts to 12 N·m (106 lb in).

  5. Install the wiring harness at the valve rocker arm cover, including the bracket.
  6. Install the purge solenoid and bracket. Refer to EVAP Canister Purge Solenoid in Engine Controls.
  7. Install the vent tube.
  8. Install the spark plug wires. Refer to Spark Plug Wires Not Operating Properly in Engine Electrical.
  9. Install the engine cover. Refer to SECTION 10A4.
  10. Connect the negative battery cable.
