Removal Procedure
• | Apply the parking brake. |
• | Position the steering column transmission shift lever to NEUTRAL
(N). |
- Disconnect the battery negative cable
assembly from the battery negative terminal. Refer to
Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing
any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to
the vehicle or its components.
in General Information.
- Raise the vehicle. Refer to General Jacking and Lifting in General
Information.
- Support the vehicle with safety stands.
- Disconnect the range select lever cable end from the transmission
range select lever. Pull the cable end from the lever stud ball.
- Move the transmission range select lever
to NEUTRAL (N) position.
- Remove the nut and the range select lever
from the manual shaft.
- Remove the wiring harness connectors from the Park/Neutral Position
switch.
- Remove the two bolts that secure the
Park/Neutral Position switch to the transmission.
- Remove the Park/Neutral Position switch from the manual shaft.
If the switch does not slide off of the manual shaft, lightly file the outer
edge of the manual shaft in order to remove any burrs from the shaft.
Installation Procedure
Tools Required
J 41364-A Neutral Position Adjustment
Tool
Important: The transmission manual shift shaft must be in the mechanical NEUTRAL
(N) position before performing the adjustment procedure. Rotate the range
select lever clockwise until it reaches the full stop position. Then move
the range select lever two dents counter-clockwise.
- Install the J 41364-A
onto the Park/Neutral Position switch. Ensure that the two slots on the switch
(where the manual shift shaft is inserted) are lined up with the lower two
tabs on the tool. Rotate the tool until the upper locator pin on the tool
is lined up with the slot on the top of the switch. Do not remove the J 41364-A
from the Park/Neutral Position switch
during switch installation.
- Install the switch to the transmission
manual shift shaft as follows:
3.1. | Before sliding the switch onto the shift shaft, remove any burrs
from the shift shaft. You may have to lightly file the outer edge of the shift
shaft. |
3.2. | Align the switch hub flats with the shift shaft flats. |
3.3. | Slide the switch onto the transmission manual shift shaft until
the switch mounting bracket contacts the mounting bosses on the transmission. |
- Install the switch to the transmission with two bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 28 N·m (21 lb ft).
- Remove the J 41364-A
from
the switch.
- Install the wiring harness connectors to the switch.
- Install the transmission range selector
lever to the transmission manual shift shaft.
Tighten
Tighten the nut to 28 N·m (21 lb ft).
- Install the range select lever cable end to the transmission range
select lever. Push the cable end onto the transmission range select lever
stud ball.
- Remove the safety stands.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Connect the battery negative cable assembly
to the battery negative terminal.
Tighten
Tighten the terminal bolt to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).
- Turn the ignition switch ON.
- Ensure that all the transmission shift positions (P, R, N, D,
3, 2, 1) engage. If you cannot perform this task, repeat the switch adjustment
procedures.
- Position the steering column transmission shift lever
to PARK (P). If you cannot perform this task, repeat the switch adjust procedures.
- Ensure that the engine starts in PARK (P) and in NEUTRAL (N) positions
only. If the engine does not start in PARK (P) and in NEUTRAL (N), repeat
the switch adjustment procedures.
- Turn the ignition switch to LOCK.
- Ensure that the ignition key can only be removed with the transmission
shift lever in the PARK (P) position.
- Start the engine and check the vehicle transmission shifting.
The range select lever cable is properly adjusted if the steering column shift
light positions are the same as the transmission engagements.
