Action

DEFINITION: Vehicle front wheel shimmy or shake while driving on a smooth road

The tire and wheel are out of balance.

Balance the tires. Refer to Tire and Wheel Balancing in Vibration Diagnosis and Correction.

The tire and wheel are out of round.

Check runout. Refer to Tire and Wheel Runout Measurement in Vibration Diagnosis and Correction.

The hub and wheel bearings are worn or loose.

Replace hub and wheel bearing assembly. Refer to Front Wheel Hub, Bearing, and Seal Replacement in Front Suspension.

The ball joints are worn.

Replace the ball joints. Refer to Lower Control Arm Ball Joint Replacement or Upper Control Arm Ball Joint Replacement in Front Suspension.

The shock absorber is malfunctioning.

  1. Inspect the shock absorbers. Refer to Struts or Shock Absorbers Bench Test .
  2. Replace the shock absorber as needed. Refer to Shock Absorber Replacement in Front Suspension.
