SUBJECT: 98030 - SPECIAL POLICY - SAFETY BELT GUIDE COVER

MODELS: 1996-1998 CHEVROLET AND GMC M/L PASSENGER VANS

CONDITION

SOME CUSTOMERS OF 1996-1998 M/L PASSENGER VANS MAY COMMENT ABOUT CONTACTING THE SAFETY BELT GUIDE COVER UPON EXITING THE VEHICLE.

CAUSE

THE TOP OF THE OLD DESIGNED SAFETY BELT GUIDE COVER PROJECTED ABOVE THE SEAT.

SPECIAL POLICY PRODUCT ENHANCEMENT

THIS SPECIAL POLICY COVERS THE CONDITION DESCRIBED ABOVE UNTIL JULY 31, 1999. DEALERS ARE TO INSTALL A REDESIGNED SAFETY BELT GUIDE COVER. USE THE FOLLOWING SERVICE PROCEDURE. THIS WILL BE PERFORMED AT NO CHARGE TO THE CUSTOMER DURING THIS TIME.

CUSTOMERS WILL BE NOTIFIED OF THIS SPECIAL POLICY ON THEIR VEHICLES BY GENERAL MOTORS (SEE COPY OF TYPICAL CUSTOMER LETTER INCLUDED WITH THIS BULLETIN - ACTUAL DIVISIONAL LETTER MAY VARY SLIGHTLY).

SERVICE PROCEDURE

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

IMPORTANT: ALL OF THE ILLUSTRATIONS SHOW THE RIGHT (PASSENGER) SEAT ASSEMBLY. THE GUIDE IS LOCATED ON THE OUTBOARD SIDE OF THE SEAT, NEXT TO THE DOOR (WHEN CLOSED). FOR EASE OF UNDERSTANDING, IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT THE PASSENGER SEAT/SHOULDER BELT OUTBOARD GUIDE BE REPLACED FIRST.

1. REVIEW THE ILLUSTRATIONS IN FIGURE 1 TO IDENTIFY THE ORIGINAL (OLD) DESIGN GUIDE FROM THE NEW DESIGN GUIDE.

2. DETERMINE WHETHER THE SEAT HAS A MANUAL OR POWER SEAT TRACK AND USE THE APPROPRIATE SERVICE PROCEDURE

REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE

REPLACEMENT OF SEAT/SHOULDER BELT GUIDE ON MANUAL SEATS (DRIVER OR PASSENGER)

1. MOVE THE MANUAL SEAT ASSEMBLY AS FAR REARWARD AS POSSIBLE.

IMPORTANT: REMOVAL OF THE GUIDE RETAINING BOLT IN THE NEXT STEP CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED EASILY IF DONE FROM BEHIND THE SEAT.

2. REMOVE THE BOLT THAT RETAINS THE SEAT/SHOULDER BELT GUIDE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEAT ASSEMBLY (FIGURE 2)

3. REMOVE THE SAFETY BELT GUIDE FROM UNDERNEATH THE SEAT ASSEMBLY.

4. TO REMOVE THE SAFETY BELT FROM THE GUIDE, INSERT A SMALL FLAT BLADED TOOL AS SHOWN IN FIGURE 5, TO RELEASE OR UNLOCK THE INNER GUIDE SECTION FROM THE OUTER GUIDE SECTION.

5. SLIDE THE INNER GUIDE SECTION IN THE DIRECTION SHOWN TO SEPARATE THE TWO PIECES.

6. REMOVE THE SAFETY BELT FROM THE GUIDE AND DISCARD BOTH GUIDE PIECES.

IMPORTANT: NEW GUIDES ARE MARKED "R" (RIGHT) FOR THE PASSENGER SEAT AND "L" (LEFT) FOR THE DRIVER'S SEAT.

7. POSITION THE NEW SAFETY BELT GUIDE UNDER THE SEAT ASSEMBLY.

8. INSTALL AND TIGHTEN THE RETAINING BOLT TO 30 NM (22 FT. LB.).

9. INSERT THE SAFETY BELT THROUGH THE OPENING IN THE GUIDE.

REPLACEMENT OF SEAT/SHOULDER BELT GUIDE ON POWER SEATS (DRIVER OR PASSENGER)

1. USING THE POWER SEAT SWITCH, RAISE OR TILT THE REAR PORTION OF THE SEAT AS HIGH AS POSSIBLE.

IMPORTANT: REMOVAL OF THE REAR TRIM COVER AND THE GUIDE RETAINING BOLT IN THE NEXT STEPS CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED EASILY IF DONE FROM BEHIND THE SEAT.

2. REMOVE THE TWO SCREWS THAT SECURE THE REAR TRIM COVER TO THE LOWER REAR OF THE POWER SEAT ASSEMBLY (FIGURE 3).

3. REMOVE THE BOLT THAT RETAINS THE SAFETY BELT GUIDE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEAT ASSEMBLY (FIGURE 4).

4. REMOVE THE SAFETY BELT GUIDE FROM UNDERNEATH THE SEAT ASSEMBLY.

5. TO REMOVE THE SAFETY BELT FROM THE GUIDE, INSERT A SMALL FLAT BLADED TOOL AS SHOWN IN FIGURE 5, TO RELEASE OR UNLOCK THE INNER GUIDE SECTION FROM THE OUTER GUIDE SECTION.

6. SLIDE THE INNER GUIDE SECTION IN THE DIRECTION SHOWN TO SEPARATE THE TWO PIECES.

7. REMOVE THE SAFETY BELT FROM THE GUIDE AND DISCARD BOTH GUIDE PIECES.

IMPORTANT: NEW GUIDES ARE MARKED "R" (RIGHT) FOR THE PASSENGER SEAT AND "L" (LEFT) FOR THE DRIVER'S SEAT.

8. POSITION THE NEW GUIDE UNDER THE SEAT ASSEMBLY.

9. INSTALL AND TIGHTEN THE RETAINING BOLT TO 30 NM (22 FT. LB.).

10. POSITION THE REAR TRIM COVER TO THE LOWER REAR OF THE POWER SEAT ASSEMBLY, INSTALL TWO SCREWS.

11. INSERT THE SAFETY BELT THROUGH THE OPENING IN THE GUIDE.

THIS NEW SAFETY BELT GUIDE COVER SITS LOWER THAN THE ORIGINAL DESIGNED GUIDE COVER AND WILL MINIMIZE BODY CONTACT WITH THE GUIDE COVER WHEN EXITING THE VEHICLE. YOUR CHEVROLET/GMC DEALER HAS THE NECESSARY INSTRUCTIONS, AND THE REQUIRED PART KIT IS CURRENTLY AVAILABLE. 5. TO REMOVE THE SAFETY BELT FROM THE GUIDE, INSERT A SMALL FLAT BLADED TOOL AS SHOWN IN FIGURE 5, TO RELEASE OR UNLOCK THE INNER GUIDE SECTION FROM THE OUTER GUIDE SECTION.

6. SLIDE THE INNER GUIDE SECTION IN THE DIRECTION SHOWN TO SEPARATE THE TWO PIECES.

7. REMOVE THE SAFETY BELT FROM THE GUIDE AND DISCARD BOTH GUIDE PIECES.

IMPORTANT: NEW GUIDES ARE MARKED "R" (RIGHT) FOR THE PASSENGER SEAT AND "L" (LEFT) FOR THE DRIVER'S SEAT.

8. POSITION THE NEW GUIDE UNDER THE SEAT ASSEMBLY.

9. INSTALL AND TIGHTEN THE RETAINING BOLT TO 30 N M (22 FT. LB.).

10. POSITION THE REAR TRIM COVER TO THE LOWER REAR OF THE POWER SEAT ASSEMBLY, INSTALL TWO SCREWS.

11. INSERT THE SAFETY BELT THROUGH THE OPENING IN THE GUIDE.
