Removal Procedure
  1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  3. Mark the relationship of the brake drum to the axle.
  4. Remove the brake drum.

    5. Object Number: 183 Size: SH
  5. Remove the brake shoe return springs.

    6. Object Number: 185 Size: SH
  6. Remove the brake shoe guide.

    7. Object Number: 203 Size: SH
  7. Remove the hold down springs.
  8. Remove the hold down pins.
  9. Remove the actuator lever and the actuator lever pivot.
  10. Remove the actuator lever and the lever pivot.
  11. Remove the lever return spring.

    12. Object Number: 394650 Size: SH
  12. Remove the parking brake strut and the strut spring.
  13. Remove the parking brake lever.

    14. Object Number: 207 Size: SH
  14. Remove the brake shoes.
  15. Remove the adjusting screw assembly and the adjusting screw spring from the brake shoes.
  16. Inspect all parts for discoloration due to heat or stress. Replace parts as needed.
  17. Replace all worn parts.
  18. Inspect the wheel cylinder for signs of leakage. If there are signs of leakage, replace the wheel cylinder. Refer to Wheel Cylinder Replacement .
  19. Inspect the brake drum for scoring and machining tolerance. Refer to Brake Drum Inspection .

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 231 Size: SH
  1. Lubricate the brake shoe backing plate, the adjusting screw threads, the socket and socket face with a thin coat of high temperature silicone lubricant.

    2. Important: Do not interchange the right and left adjusting screws.


    Object Number: 207 Size: SH
  2. Install the adjusting screw assembly and the adjusting screw spring on the brake shoes. The coils of the adjusting screw spring must not touch the adjusting screw.
  3. Install the brake shoes on the backing plate.

    4. Object Number: 394650 Size: SH
  4. Install the parking brake lever.
  5. Install the strut spring on the parking brake strut.
  6. Install the parking brake strut.

    7. Object Number: 203 Size: SH
  7. Install the actuator lever and the lever pivot.
  8. Install the actuator lever return spring.
  9. Install the hold down pins.
  10. Install the hold down springs.

    11. Object Number: 185 Size: SH
  11. Install the brake shoe guide.

    12. Object Number: 183 Size: SH
  12. Install the brake shoe return springs.
  13. Install the brake drum.

    14. Align the marks made during disassembly.

  14. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  15. Adjust the brakes. Refer to Drum Brake Adjustment .
  16. Lower the vehicle.
