Removal Procedure

Caution: To avoid any vehicle damage, serious personal injury or death when major components are removed from the vehicle and the vehicle is supported by a hoist, support the vehicle with jack stands at the opposite end from which the components are being removed and strap the vehicle to the hoist.

  1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Support the rear axle housing separately.
  3. Remove the tires and wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  4. Disconnect the shock absorbers from the axle. Refer to Shock Absorber Replacement .
  5. Disconnect the rear propeller shaft from the axle. Refer to Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
  6. Secure the propeller shaft up and out of the way in a manner avoiding stress on the universal joints.

  7. Remove the left side park brake cable. Refer to Parking Brake Rear Cable Replacement - Left Side in Park Brake.
  8. Remove the right side park brake cable. Refer to Parking Brake Rear Cable Replacement - Right Side in Park Brake.
  9. Disconnect the brake calipers from the brake caliper brackets. DO NOT disconnect the hydraulic brake flexible hose from the caliper. Refer to Rear Brake Caliper Replacement in Disc Brakes.
  10. Disconnect the brake hose junction block from the axle housing. DO NOT disconnect the brake lines or hose from the junction block. Refer to Rear Brake Hose Replacement in Hydraulic Brakes.
  11. Disconnect the brake pipe/brake hose brackets from the brake backing plates.
  12. Disconnect the brake lines from the axle housing.
  13. Suspend the brake lines and brake hoses from the vehicle using heavy mechanic's wire.
  14. Disconnect the vent hose from the axle housing.
  15. Remove the U-bolts and anchor plates. Refer to Leaf Spring Replacement in Rear Suspension.
  16. Lower the axle housing from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

  1. Raise the axle to the vehicle.
  2. Install the U-bolts and anchor plates. Refer to Leaf Spring Replacement in Rear Suspension.
  3. Install the vent hose to the axle housing.
  4. Install the brake pipe/brake hose brackets to the brake backing plate.
  5. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  6. Install the brake pipe/brake hose bracket bolts.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the brake pipe/brake hose bracket bolts to 12 N·m (106 lb in).

  8. Install the brake hose junction block to the axle housing. Refer to Rear Brake Hose Replacement in Hydraulic Brakes.
  9. Install the brake pipes to the axle housing.
  10. Install the brake calipers. Refer to Rear Brake Caliper Replacement in Disc Brakes.
  11. Install the right side park brake cable. Refer to Parking Brake Rear Cable Replacement - Right Side in Park Brake.
  12. Install the left side park brake cable. Refer to Parking Brake Rear Cable Replacement - Left Side in Park Brake.
  13. Install the rear propeller shaft. Refer to Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
  14. Install the shock absorbers. Refer to Shock Absorber Replacement .
  15. Install the tires and wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  16. Fill the axle with axle lubricant. Use the proper fluid. Refer to Rear Axle Lubricant Replacement .
  17. Lower the vehicle.
