Converter Holding Strap
Removal Procedure
- Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to
Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection
.
- Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
.
- Remove the rear propeller shaft. Refer to
Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement
.
- Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
- Remove the transmission crossmember. Refer to
Transmission Support Crossmember Replacement
.
- Remove the transmission mount. Refer to
Transmission Mount Replacement
.
- Remove the catalytic converter pipe. Refer to
Catalytic Converter Replacement
.
- If the vehicle is equipped with a transfer case, remove the front propeller shaft. Refer to
Front Propeller Shaft Replacement
.
- Remove the starter motor. Refer to
Starter Motor Replacement
.
- Remove the torque converter. Refer to
Transmission Converter Cover Replacement
.
- Remove the flywheel to torque converter bolts.
- Lower the transmission to gain access to the top and sides of the transmission.
- Disconnect the vent tube hose and the electrical connections from the transfer case, if equipped.
- Remove the transfer case, if equipped. Refer to the appropriate procedure:
- Remove the 2 bolts securing the heat shield to the transmission.
- Remove the transmission heat shield.
- Remove the range selector cable retaining clip (1) from the transmission range selector cable.
- Remove the range selector cable (2) from the range selector lever ball stud and the range selector cable bracket.
- Disconnect the transmission vent hose.
- Disconnect the vehicle speed sensors (1, 2).
- Disconnect the main electrical connector (3).
- Disconnect park/neutral position switch connector (4).
- Remove the wire harness from the bracket on the transmission.
- Remove the bolt that secures the fuel line bracket to the left side of the transmission.
- Disconnect the transmission oil cooler lines from the transmission. Refer to
Transmission Fluid Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement
.
- Plug the transmission oil cooler line connectors in the transmission case.
- Remove the indicator tube nut.
- Remove the 6 bolts securing the transmission to the engine.
- Pull the transmission straight back.
- Install the
J 21366
onto the transmission bell housing to retain the torque converter.
- Remove the transmission from the vehicle while simultaneously removing the fluid level indicator tube.
- Flush the transmission oil cooler and cooling lines if necessary. Refer to
Transmission Fluid Cooler Flushing and Flow Test
.
Installation Procedure
- Install the
J 21366
onto the transmission bell housing to retain the torque converter.
- Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
- Raise the transmission into place while simultaneously installing the fluid indicator tube.
- Remove the
J 21366
from the transmission.
- Slide the transmission straight onto the locating pins while lining up the marks on the flywheel and the torque converter.
The torque converter must rotate freely by hand.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.
- Install 6 bolts securing the transmission to the engine.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).
- Install the indicator tube nut.
Tighten
Tighten the nut to 18 N·m (13 lb ft).
- Connect the vehicle speed sensors (1, 2).
- Connect the main electrical connector (3).
- Connect park/neutral position switch connector (4).
- Attach the wire harness to the bracket on the transmission.
- Connect the transmission vent hose.
- Install the range selector cable (2) to the range selector cable bracket and the range selector lever
ball stud.
- Install the range selector cable retaining clip (1) to the transmission range selector cable.
- Install the 2 bolts securing the heat shield to the transmission.
Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 17 N·m (13 lb ft).
- Install the transfer case, if equipped. Refer to the appropriate procedure:
- Connect the vent hose and electrical connectors to the transfer case, if equipped.
- If reusing the torque converter bolts, clean the bolt threads and apply LOCTITE
242, GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489), or equivalent to the threads prior to installation.
- Install the flywheel to torque converter bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 63 N·m (46 lb ft).
- Install the torque converter. Refer to
Transmission Converter Cover Replacement

- Install the starter motor. Refer to
Starter Motor Replacement
.
- If the vehicle is equipped with a transfer case, install the front propeller shaft. Refer to
Front Propeller Shaft Replacement
.
- Install the catalytic converter pipe. Refer to
Catalytic Converter Replacement
.
- Install the transmission mount. Refer to
Transmission Mount Replacement
.
- Install the transmission crossmember. Refer to
Transmission Support Crossmember Replacement
.
- Remove the transmission jack.
- Install the rear propeller shaft. Refer to
Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement
.
- Connect the oil cooler lines to the transmission. Refer to
Transmission Fluid Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement
.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to
Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection
.
- Fill the transmission to the proper level. Refer to
Transmission Fluid Check
.
Important: It is recommended that transmission adaptive pressure (TAP) information be reset.
Resetting the TAP values using a scan tool will erase all learned values in all cells. As a result, the engine control module
(ECM), powertrain control module (PCM), or transmission control module (TCM) will need to relearn TAP values. Transmission performance may be affected as new TAP values are learned.
- Reset the TAP values. Refer to
