Valve Lifter Remover
Removal Procedure
- Remove the intake manifold. Refer to
Intake Manifold Replacement
.
- Remove the valve rocker arms and pushrods. Refer to
Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement
.
- Remove the valve lifter guide retainer bolts and retainer.
- Remove the valve lifter guides.
Important: Mark, sort, or organize the valve lifters and guides for installation in their original location.
- Remove the valve lifters.
- Some valve lifter may be stuck in their bore due to gum or varnish deposits, These lifters can be removed using
J 3049-A
.
- Clean and inspect the valve lifters. Refer to
Valve Lifter and Guide Cleaning and Inspection
.
Installation Procedure
Important: If a new camshaft is installed, replace all the valve lifters.
- Coat the valve lifter rollers with lubricant. Refer to
Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers
for the correct part number.
Important: If reusing the valve lifters, install the lifters in their original location. The valve lifter guide retainer must contact all of the valve lifter guides. If the lifter guide retainer is bent, the valve lifter guide retainer
must be replaced.
- Install the valve lifters.
- Install the valve lifter guides over the flats on the valve lifters, making sure the rollers of the valve lifters are properly aligned with the camshaft lobes.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.
- Install the valve lifter guide retainer.
- Install the valve lifter guide retainer bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).
- Install the valve rocker arms and pushrods. Refer to

- Install the intake manifold. Refer to
Intake Manifold Replacement
.
