Subject: | Tonneau Cover to Midgate Water Leak (Adjust Strikers) |
Models: | 2002-2008 Cadillac Escalade EXT |
| 2002-2008 Chevrolet Avalanche |
Condition
Some customers may comment on a waterleak between the first tonneau cover and the midgate.
Cause
The front striker for the tonneau cover may need to be moved forward to improve the seal compression to the midgate.
Correction
- Determine where the leak is taking place. Note that water in the drain troughs on either side of the bed is normal, and is part of the water management system.
- At the location where the water leak is observed, first check to assure that the seals are in good condition and not twisted, deformed out of position or damaged in such a manner that would allow leakage to occur.
- Inspect the seal clearance in the vicinity where leakage is observed. At the midgate to cover #1 interface, the thickness of a sheet of paper (about 1 mm) is the maximum thickness that can be placed in the seal interface.
Refer to the illustration above.
- If the seal gap exceeds the suggested amount in step 3, adjust the striker on the affected side by loosening the two retaining bolts, sliding the striker slightly forward and retightening the bolts. Inspect the gap and repeat
the process until the correct gap is achieved.
- The remaining strikers on the same side of the vehicle may need to be repositioned. See attached dimensional specifications for readjustment.
- Once the strikers are readjusted, install the tonneau covers. To assure proper location, insert each panel in order, always latching the driver's side latch first and then the passenger side next on each panel. Refer to the illustration
above.
- To verify that the cover to cover seal interfaces are correct, sight each joint from cross vehicle position to assure that the interfaces are parallel and uniform. Refer to the illustration above. If not, remove the covers and adjust the passenger
side striker positions to align the seal interfaces. Once the adjustment is complete, reinstall the tonneau covers latching the driver's side latch first and then the passenger side next on each panel.
- Inspect for water leakage by running water onto the tonneau covers. Repeat adjustment process if water leakage is still observed.
