Subject: 1.6 L91 Engine MIL Light On with No DTCs Stored

Models:.

When servicing the vehicle with the VIN you entered, the following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the described symptoms.

Condition/Concern:

MIL on with no DTCs stored.

Recommendation/Instructions:

DTCs are not stored in the ECM unless the DTC is set during the current drive trip or a hard code. The DTC will be erased once the test is ran for that particular DTC in a subsequent drive trip and passed. The MIL will be turned off after three consecutive trips without the same failure. Reference SI document 1380437 for the definition of trip. Hence it is possible to have the MIL light illuminated and no DTCs stored.

Additionally the Tech 2 does not have a function to erase the DTC when it is current. DTCs may be erased and the MIL turned off by removing the ECM main fuse or unplugging the ECM connectors for 5 to 10 minutes. If the MIL light is on and no DTCs are stored, test drive the vehicle to see if a DTC will reset. If so, follow published diagnostics. Do not replace the ECM if you encounter this condition.

.

Please follow this diagnosis process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed. If these steps do not resolve the condition, please contact GM TAC for further diagnostic assistance. This diagnostic approach was developed for the vehicle with the VIN you entered and should not be automatically be used for other vehicles with similar symptoms.
