EI06005 - 1.6L L91 Timing Belt Inspection, Maintenance, Worn, Wear (Engineering Information)

Subject:EI06005 - 1.6L L91 Timing Belt Inspection, Maintenance, Worn, Wear (Engineering Information)

Models:2004 Chevrolet Aveo
with 1.6L Engine (VIN 6 - RPO L91)

Attention: If the vehicle is within 50,000-90,000 km (30,000-55,000 mi) and still equipped with the original OEM timing belt, General Motors would like to supply the customer with a new timing belt (parts only). Because timing belt inspection and maintenance is the responsibility of the customer, the customer would be responsible for the labor to replace the timing belt. The customer's authorization must be obtained before the dealer/technician can proceed with this bulletin.

Important: Goodwill of timing belts will be for a limited time -- until engineering has obtained a sufficient sample. This bulletin will be updated when parts are no longer required for engineering analysis.

The current maintenance schedule requires inspection of the timing belt at 50,000 km (30,000 mi) and replacement at 96,560 km (60,000 mi). During the inspection, replacement should be made if the belt shows any early warning signs of failure, such as:

   •

hardening

   •

tooth separation

   •

cracking

   •

missing rubber or exposed fibers

Important:  If the vehicle mileage is not between 50,000-90,000 km (30,000-55,000 mi), disregard this bulletin.

GM Engineering is interested in evaluating timing belt wear. Because timing belt inspection/replacement is a customer-pay maintenance item, parts are currently not available for engineering inspection.

If the vehicle is within the mileage parameters and the vehicle is still equipped with the original OEM timing belt, General Motors would like to "goodwill" a new timing belt (parts only) for the customer in order to have the timing belt returned for engineering evaluation. Since this is a maintenance item, the customer would still be responsible for the cost of labor. If the vehicle qualifies and the customer is accepting of having their timing belt replaced, follow the procedure below.

  1. Inspect the timing belt and note the following information on the repair order:
  2.  - What is the part number of the timing belt currently on the vehicle?
     - Does the belt show any signs of cracking?
     - Is there any tooth separation?
     - Is any of the rubber missing or fibers exposed?
     - Does the belt shows signs of hardening?

Important:  Do not cut or damage the OE belt during removal.

  3. Replace the timing belt according to the procedure in SI.
  4. Be sure the correct vehicle mileage is noted on the repair order.
  5. Contact the PQC (1-866-654-7654) to document the information from the inspection. The PQC will submit the necessary paperwork to have the part returned through the Warranty Parts Center (WPC) process.
  6. Be sure the part is turned in to the Parts Department so the timing belt and repair order can be sent as soon as the dealership receives the request from the WPC.
