Brake Drum Replacement Prior to VIN 5B426447

Removal Procedure

  1. Release the park brake.
  2. Apply the brake pedal 10 times.
  3. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  4. Remove the rear tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  5. Remove the spindle cap.

  7. Unstake the caulking nut.
  8. Remove the caulking nut from the spindle.
  9. Caution: Refer to Brake Dust Caution in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 1242004  Size: SH

    Important: Pull the wheel bearing/hub/drum/studs assembly straight off the spindle. The 2 inner wheel bearing races are not secured inside the drum by a ring.

  10. Remove the wheel bearing/hub/drum/studs assembly from the spindle.
  11. If necessary, remove the wheel bearing from the drum. Refer to Rear Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement .

Inspection Procedure

  1. Clean the brake components.
  2. Inspect the brake drum and the inner races of the wheel bearings inside the drum. Replace the drum, if necessary. Refer to Brake Drum Surface and Wear Inspection .

  3. Object Number: 1245725  Size: SH
  4. Apply lubricant to the adjuster assembly.
  5. Inspect the threads of the adjuster assembly for smooth rotation.

Installation Procedure

  1. If you removed the wheel bearing, install the wheel bearing. Refer to Rear Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement .
  2. Adjust the rear brakes. Refer to Drum Brake Adjustment .

  3. Object Number: 1242004  Size: SH

    Important: Slide the wheel bearing/hub/drum/studs assembly straight onto the spindle. Use care in order to properly position the wheel bearing races on the spindle.

  4. Install the wheel bearing/hub/drum/studs assembly to the spindle.
  5. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  6. Install the caulking nut to the spindle.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 190 N·m (140 lb ft).

  8. Stake the caulking nut.
  9. Install the spindle cap.
  10. Install the rear tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  11. Lower the vehicle.
  12. Important: If the clicking sound of the adjuster is not audible from either brake drum, the clearance between the brake shoes and the brake drum is adjusted.

  13. Apply the brake pedal at least 10 times in order to adjust the clearance between the brake shoes and the brake drum.
  14. Verify the clicking sound of the adjuster assembly is not audible from either brake drum.

  15. Adjust the park brake. Refer to Park Brake Adjustment .

Brake Drum Replacement VIN 5B426447 and After

Removal Procedure

  1. Release the park brake.
  2. Apply the brake pedal 10 times.
  3. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
  4. Remove the rear tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.

  5. Object Number: 1753792  Size: SH
  6. Remove the spindle cap (5).
  7. Remove the screws  (6) from the brake drum (3).
  8. Remove the brake drum from the hub (3).

Inspection Procedure

  1. Clean the brake components.
  2. Inspect the brake drum. Replace the drum, if necessary. Refer to Brake Drum Surface and Wear Inspection.

  3. Object Number: 1245725  Size: SH
  4. Apply lubricant to the adjuster assembly.
  5. Inspect the threads of the adjuster assembly for smooth rotation.

Installation Procedure

  1. Adjust the rear brakes. Refer to Drum Brake Adjustment.

  2. Object Number: 1753792  Size: SH
  3. Install the brake drum (3) to the hub (7).
  4. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  5. Install the screws  (6) to the brake drum.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the screws to 4 N·m (35 lb in).

  7. Install the spindle cap (5).
  8. Install the rear tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10. Important: If the clicking sound of the adjuster is not audible from either brake drum, the clearance between the brake shoes and the brake drum is adjusted.

  11. Apply the brake pedal at least 10 times in order to adjust the clearance between the brake shoes and the brake drum.
  12. Verify the clicking sound of the adjuster assembly is not audible from either brake drum.

  13. Adjust the park brake. Refer to Park Brake Adjustment.
