This PI was superseded to reference 05-06-01-010 for determining the correct oil pan sealant. Please dicard PIP3988.

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

On rare occasions, a heli-coil may be removed from the oil pan drain plug opening when the oil pan drain plug is removed during an oil change. Some technicians may wonder if another technician installed this heli-coil during a previous repair.

Recommendation/Instructions:

This heli-coil is part of the oil pan assembly and is installed during manufacturing. The harder material of the heli-coil allows repetitive removal and installation of the oil pan drain plug. The cause of this concern is under investigation. Until the cause of this concern is understood, follow SI procedures and replace the oil pan with part number 96481581, which includes a new drain plug and drain plug washer. If necessary, refer to 05-06-01-010 to determine the type of sealant to use when installing the oil pan.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
