Circuit/System Description

The manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor responds to pressure changes in the intake manifold. The pressure changes occur based on the engine load. The engine control module (ECM) supplies 5 volts to the MAP sensor on the 5-volt reference circuit. The ECM provides a ground on the low reference circuit. The MAP sensor provides a signal to the ECM on the MAP sensor signal circuit which is relative to the pressure changes in the manifold. The ECM detects a low signal voltage at a low MAP, such as during an idle or a deceleration. The ECM detects a high signal voltage at a high MAP, such as the ignition is ON, with the engine OFF, or at a wide open throttle (WOT). The MAP sensor is also used to determine the barometric pressure (BARO). This occurs when the ignition switch is turned ON, with the engine OFF. The BARO reading may also be updated whenever the throttle position (TP) sensor is greater than 28 percent.

Condition for Running the DTC

    • DTCs P0107, P0108, P0117, P0118, P0122, P0123, P0201, P0202, P0203, P0204, P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0351, P0352, P0402, P0404, P0405, P0406, P0506, P0507, and P1404 are not set.
    • The engine is running.
    • Valid BARO update
    • The traction control is not active.
    • The torque converter clutch (TCC) is steady.
    • The A/C compressor clutch is steady.
    • The coolant temperature is more than -10°C (+14°F).
    •  The engine speed is between 1,300-4,500 RPM.
    • The change in engine speed is less than 200 RPM.
    • The change in idle air is less than 5 percent.
    • The change in throttle position (TP) is less than 3 percent, or the change in MAP is less than 5 percent.
    • The change in exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) position is less than 6 percent.
    • The above conditions are stabilized for 1.5 seconds.
    • DTC P0106 runs continuously once the above conditions are met.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

The ECM detects that the actual MAP signal is not within the predicted range for more than 25 seconds.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

DTC P0106 is a Type B DTC.

Conditions for Clearing the MIL/DTC

DTC P0106 is a Type B DTC.

Diagnostic Aids

With the ignition ON and the engine stopped, the manifold pressure is equal to atmospheric pressure and the signal voltage will be high. This information is used by the ECM as an indication of vehicle altitude. Comparison of this reading with a known good vehicle with the same sensor is a good way to check the accuracy of a suspect sensor. Readings should be the same +0.4 volt.

The MAP sensor vacuum source should be thoroughly inspected for restrictions at the intake manifold.

Circuit/System Verification

  1. Start the engine. Observe the MAP Sensor parameter. The reading should be between 32-42 kPa.
  2. Important: The vehicle used for the comparison is not limited to the same type of vehicle being serviced. A vehicle known to provide an accurate reading is acceptable.

  3. Ignition ON, engine OFF, compare the MAP sensor pressure parameter to the pressure parameter of a known good vehicle. The reading should be within 3 kPa of the known good vehicle.
  4. Important: The Altitude vs Barometric Pressure table indicates a pressure range for a given altitude under normal weather conditions. Weather conditions consisting of very low or very high pressure and/or very low or very high temperature may cause a reading to be slightly out of range.

  5. Ignition ON, compare the MAP sensor pressure parameter to the reading in the Altitude Versus Barometric Pressure . The MAP sensor pressure parameter should be within the specified range indicated on the table.
  6. Start the engine. The MAP sensor pressure parameter should change while starting the engine.
  7. Engine running, snap the throttle while observing the MAP sensor pressure parameter on the scan tool. The MAP sensor pressure parameter should change rapidly when the throttle position changes.
  8. If the vehicle passes the Circuit/System Verification Test, then operate the vehicle within the conditions for running the DTC. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that are captured in the Freeze Frame/Failure Records List.

Circuit/System Testing

  1. Verify that none of the following conditions exist:
  2. • Vacuum leaks or restrictions at the MAP sensor
    • Engine vacuum leaks
    • Restricted exhaust--Refer to Restricted Exhaust .
    • Worn piston rings--Refer to Engine Compression Test .
    • Incorrect cam timing--Refer to Timing Belt Inspection for the correct timing.
  3. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector of the throttle body assembly.
  4. Ignition ON, test for less than 0.2 volt between the low reference circuit of the TP sensor/ISC motor position sensor and ground.
  5. If greater than the specified value, test the low reference circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit/connections test normal, replace the ECM.
  6. Ignition OFF, test for less than 5 ohms of resistance between the low reference circuit of the TP sensor/ISC motor position sensor and ground.
  7. If greater than specified value, test the low reference circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit/connections test normal, replace the ECM.

    Important: The 5-volt reference circuits are internally and externally connected at the ECM. Other component DTCs may be set. If other DTCs are set, review the electrical schematic and diagnose the applicable circuits and components.

  8. Ignition ON, load test for 4.8-5.2 volts between the 5-volt reference circuit of the TP sensor and ground.
  9. If less than the specified range, test the 5-volt reference circuit of the TP sensor for a short to ground or open/high resistance. If the circuit/connections test normal, replace the ECM.
    If greater than the specified range, test the 5-volt reference circuit of the TP sensor for a short to voltage. If the circuit/connections test normal, replace the ECM.
  10. Ignition ON, verify that the scan tool TP sensor voltage parameter is less than 0.3 volt.
  11. If greater than the specified value, test the signal circuit of the TP sensor for a short to voltage. If the circuit/connections test normal, replace the ECM.
  12. Install a 3-amp fused jumper wire between the signal circuit and the 5-volt reference circuit of the TP sensor. Verify that the scan tool TP sensor voltage parameter is greater than 4.8 volts.
  13. If less than the specified value, test the signal circuit of the TP sensor for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit/connections test normal, replace the ECM.
  14. Ignition OFF, connect the harness connector of the throttle body assembly.
  15. Disconnect the harness connector of the MAP sensor.
  16. Ignition ON, test for less than 0.2 volt between the low reference circuit of the MAP sensor and ground.
  17. If greater than the specified value, test the low reference circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit/connections test normal, replace the ECM.
  18. Ignition OFF, test for less than 5 ohms of resistance between the low reference circuit of the MAP sensor and ground.
  19. If greater than specified value, test the low reference circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit/connections test normal, replace the ECM.
  20. Ignition ON, verify that the MAP sensor parameter is less than 12 kPa.
  21. If greater than 12 kPa, test the signal circuit of the MAP sensor for a short to voltage. If the circuit/connections test normal, replace the ECM.

    Important: The 5-volt reference circuits are internally and externally connected at the ECM. Other component DTCs may be set. If other DTCs are set, review the electrical schematic and diagnose the applicable circuits and components.

  22. Load test for 4.8-5.2 volts between the 5-volt reference circuit of the MAP sensor and ground.
  23. If less than the specified range, test the 5-volt reference circuit of the MAP sensor for a short to ground or open/high resistance. If the circuit/connections test normal, replace the ECM.
    If greater than the specified range, test the 5-volt reference circuit of the MAP sensor for a short to voltage. If the circuit/connections test normal, replace the ECM.
  24. Ignition ON, install a 3-amp fused jumper wire between the signal circuit and the 5-volt reference circuit of the MAP sensor. Verify that the scan tool MAP sensor pressure parameter is greater than 102 kPa.
  25. If less than the specified value, test the signal circuit of the MAP sensor for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit/connections test normal, replace the ECM.
  26. If all circuits/connections test normal, test or replace the MAP sensor.

Component Testing

TP Sensor

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector of the throttle body assembly.
  2. Measure for 1160-1175 ohms between the 5-volt reference and the low reference terminals of the TP sensor.
  3. If the resistance is not within the specified range, replace the throttle body assembly.
  4. Measure the resistance between the signal terminal and the low reference terminal of the TP sensor. Sweep the TP sensor through the entire range. The resistance should vary between 1530-630 ohms without any spikes or dropouts.
  5. If the resistance is not within the specified range or is erratic, replace the throttle body assembly.
  6. Apply 5 volts and ground to the applicable terminals of the TP sensor, and measure the voltage between the signal and the low reference terminals. Sweep the TP sensor through the entire range. The voltage should vary between 4.3-0.6 volts without any spikes or dropouts.
  7. If the voltage is not within the specified range or is erratic, replace the throttle body assembly.

MAP Sensor

  1. Ignition OFF, perform one of the following applicable procedures.
  2. • Disconnect the vacuum supply hose from the MAP sensor
    • Remove the MAP sensor from the intake manifold
  3. Ignition ON, observe and record the scan tool MAP sensor pressure data parameter. This is the first MAP sensor reading.
  4. With the J 23738-A apply 5 in Hg (17 kPa) of vacuum to the MAP sensor. Observe and record the scan tool MAP sensor pressure data parameter. This is the second MAP sensor reading.
  5. Subtract the second MAP sensor reading from the first MAP sensor reading. Verify that the vacuum decrease is within 1 in Hg (4 kPa) of the applied vacuum.
  6. If the vacuum decrease is not within the specified range, replace the MAP sensor.
  7. With the J 23738-A apply 10 in Hg (34 kPa) of vacuum to the MAP sensor. Observe and record the scan tool MAP sensor pressure data parameter. This is the third MAP sensor reading.
  8. Subtract the third MAP sensor reading from the first MAP sensor reading. Verify that the vacuum decrease is within 1 in Hg (4 kPa) of the applied vacuum.
  9. If the vacuum is not with in the specified range, replace the MAP sensor.

Repair Instructions
