Subject: | EI08029 - L91 ECM Replacement, Reprogramming, MIL/SES and/or DTC Set, Driveability Concerns, Reduced Engine Power or Poor Performance (Engineering Information) |
Models: | 2006-2008 Chevrolet Aveo |
with 1.6L 4-Cylinder Engine (VIN 6 - RPO L91) |
Attention: | Proceed with this bulletin ONLY if the customer has commented about this concern AND the EI number is listed in GMVIS. If the customer has not commented about this condition or the EI does not show in GMVIS, disregard the bulletin and proceed with diagnostics found in published service information. THIS IS NOT A RECALL. Refer to Corporate Bulletin Number 04-00-89-053B for more details on the use of Engineering Information Bulletins. |
This bulletin is being revised to update the contact information. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 08-06-04-007 (Section 06 -- Engine/Propulsion System).
Important: "GM of Canada" dealers are NOT authorized to utilize this service bulletin.
Some customers may comment on an illumination of the MIL/SES or various driveability concerns with one or more of the following symptoms:
• | Reduced Engine Power |
• | Rough Idle |
• | Poor Performance, etc. |
Upon further investigation, the technician may find more than one related ECM DTCs stored in the module.
Important: Verify that the VIN and mileage is accurate and that the customers concern is accurately documented on the repair order (R.O.).
GM Engineering is attempting to determine the root cause for the rise in engine control module (ECM) replacement. GM Engineering has a need to obtain information first hand from the dealer technician during diagnosis and before repair. As a result, this information will be used by engineering to "root cause" the customer's concern and develop/validate a field fix. Please follow the instructions below depending on the fault present.
• | If the ECM contains DTC P0606 - Control Module Internal Performance - and the date code (1) on the ECM is between 5278-6063, then the ECM will need to be replaced. Refer to Engine Control Module Replacement in SI. |
• | If the ECM contains a calibration-related failure code, then reprogram the ECM using the latest TIS2WEB calibrations. Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) in SI. |
• | If normal SI diagnostics lead to ECM replacement, e-mail any freeze frame data to tim.k.sheffer@delphi.com and contact Timothy K. Sheffer at 585-359-6577 for further instructions. |
Important: Internal fault diagnostic codes or driveability concerns may be caused by factors external to the ECM.
If normal SI diagnostics lead to ECM replacement, e-mail any captured data to tim.k.sheffer@delphi.com and contact Timothy K. Sheffer at 585-359-6577 for further instructions.
Important: DO NOT replace the ECM. Replacement of the ECM may result in a failed repair attempt or customer comeback condition.
Explain to the customer that you are not able to duplicate the concern at this time. Determine if customer is willing to use a data recorder to help diagnose the concern.
• | If the customer is willing to use a data recorder, install a J 42598 or equivalent vehicle data recorder. Educate the customer on how to use the data recorder and schedule a return service appointment for the customer. |
• | If at anytime normal SI diagnostics lead to ECM replacement, e-mail any captured data to tim.k.sheffer@delphi.com and contact Timothy K. Sheffer at 585-359-6577 for further instructions. |
You may contact the Delphi Powertrain Engineer, Timothy K. Sheffer at 585-359-6577 for additional information or guidance before repairing the vehicle. Please e-mail any freeze frame data or snap shots to tim.k.sheffer@delphi.com. This call may result in a special request to return parts that exhibit unique conditions. In either case, you should receive a response back within two hours on what action to take the same business day of your call (Eastern Daylight Time).
If you do not receive a response from engineering, then proceed to repair the vehicle.
Important: DO NOT use the labor operation listed below if engineering did not respond.
