Some 1987-88 L-cars with 2.0L engines (RPO LL8) may exhibit an exhaust moan/resonance that may be detectable in the vehicle passenger compartment.
This condition may be repaired by the installation of a damper, P/N 488974, forward of the muffler assembly in conjunction with alignment of the exhaust system.
Damper installation and alignment procedure indicated below must be followed to insure optimum results.
1. Raise vehicle
2. Disconnect exhaust hangers at muffler and intermediate pipe attachments and let system hang down.
3. Position damper, P/N 488974 forward of muffler assembly and secure with exhaust clamp, P/N 3634389 as shown in Illustration. Torque fasteners to 25 - 35 Nm (20-25 ft.lbs.).
4. Elevate exhaust system and connect at rear muffler hanger. Torque fastener to 40 - 55 Nm (30-40 ft. lbs.).
5. Connect system at front muffler hanger and torque fastener to 40 - 55 Nm (30-40 ft. lbs.).
6. Connect at intermediate pipe hanger and torque fastener to 20 - 30 Nm (15-22 ft. lbs.).
7. Lower vehicle.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
