EXHAUST MOAN/RESONANCE INSTALL DAMPER/SERVICE PROCED.

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1987-88 L-CAR W/2.0L

Some 1987-88 L-cars with 2.0L engines (RPO LL8) may exhibit an exhaust moan/resonance that may be detectable in the vehicle passenger compartment.

This condition may be repaired by the installation of a damper, P/N 488974, forward of the muffler assembly in conjunction with alignment of the exhaust system.

Damper installation and alignment procedure indicated below must be followed to insure optimum results.

Service Procedure:

1. Raise vehicle

2. Disconnect exhaust hangers at muffler and intermediate pipe attachments and let system hang down.

3. Position damper, P/N 488974 forward of muffler assembly and secure with exhaust clamp, P/N 3634389 as shown in Illustration. Torque fasteners to 25 - 35 Nm (20-25 ft.lbs.).

4. Elevate exhaust system and connect at rear muffler hanger. Torque fastener to 40 - 55 Nm (30-40 ft. lbs.).

5. Connect system at front muffler hanger and torque fastener to 40 - 55 Nm (30-40 ft. lbs.).

6. Connect at intermediate pipe hanger and torque fastener to 20 - 30 Nm (15-22 ft. lbs.).

7. Lower vehicle.
