VEHICLE PULLS TO THE RIGHT POSSIBLE REMOVAL (COOLER PIPE)

SUBJECT: VEHICLE HAS A LEAD/PULL TO THE RIGHT (POSSIBLE REMOVAL OF POWER STEERING COOLER PIPE)

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1991 "L" CAR W/2.2L -------------------

Condition: Some 1991 "L" cars with the 2.2L (VIN G) may exhibit a ---------- condition of leading or pulling to the right that Product Service Bulletin # 90-3-130 did not correct. In the cases where rotating front tires and adjusting camber to 2 degrees cross camber (+1 degree left, -1degree right) did not fix the lead or pull, the following symptoms may be present.

1. The steering wheel may feel noticeably "light" when turning to the right during parking lot maneuvers.

2. With the engine at idle and the steering wheel centered, the pressure between the pump and gear may be higher than normal (normal pressure is typically under 100 psi).

3. Disconnecting the power steering system will cause the lead/pull to stop. (Note: The rack and pinion will not pull/lead to the right by itself while the vehicle is on a hoist. This condition can only be found by road testing the vehicle). To disconnect the steering system, connect the gear inlet to the gear-outlet and the pump inlet to the pump outlet.

IMPORTANT: All steps in Product Service Bulletin # 90-3-130, including ---------- front tire rotations, must be followed before attempting the repair procedures outlined in this bulletin.

Cause: Center take-off rack and pinion steering gears have an inherent ------ right side slight lead/pull due to the rack rod located on only one side of the piston.

Correction:

----------- 1. Check and replace all power steering lines that have restrictions or debris which may limit the steering fluid flow.

2. If no restrictions are found, remove the power steering cooler pipe to reduce the lead/pull.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
