Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to General Lifting and Jacking in General Information.
  3. Remove the transfer case shield. Refer to Shield Replacement .
  4. Remove the front propeller shaft. Refer to Front Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
  5. Remove the rear propeller shaft. Refer to One-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement or to Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.

  7. Remove the vent hose from the transfer case. Refer to Vent Hose.
  8. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor electrical connector.
  9. Disconnect the wiring harness from the transfer case.

  11. Remove the transfer case motor/encoder.
  12. Support the transfer case with a jack.

  13. Remove the bolts securing the transfer case to the transmission adapter.
  14. Remove the gasket.

  15. Object Number: 2214  Size: SH
  16. Discard the gasket.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 2214  Size: SH
  1. Install a new gasket to the transmission. Use a gasket sealer in order to hold the gasket in place.

  2. Object Number: 2213  Size: SH
  3. Install the transfer case to the transmission adapter.
  4. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 2217  Size: SH
  5. Install the bolts that secure the transfer case to the transmission adapter.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 45 N·m (33 lb ft).

  7. Install the transfer case motor/encoder.
  8. Remove the jack from the transfer case.
  9. Install the electrical connectors and the wiring harness to the transfer case with the new straps.
  10. Install the vent hose to the transfer case. Refer to Vent Hose.
  11. Install the rear propeller shaft. Refer to One-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement or to Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
  12. Install the front propeller shaft. Refer to Front Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
  13. Install the transfer case shield. Refer to Shield Replacement .
  14. • Check the transfer case lubricant level. Add oil as necessary. Refer to Fastener Tightening Specifications .
    • Lower the vehicle.
  15. Connect the negative battery cable.
  16. Perform the Idle Learn Procedure for 4.8L, 5.3L and 6.0L engines only. Refer to PCM Idle Learn Procedure in Engine Controls-4.8L, 5.3L and 6.0L.
