The transmission shift control rod (Figure No. 1) on some 1983-85 Trucks equipped with 700-R4 automatic transmissions can make contact with the exhaust manifold and/or the transmission bell housing. This may cause a buzzing or scraping type of noise when the vehicle gear selector is placed in the OD range and the vehicle is accelerated.
A revised shift rod, P/N 15590334, and swivel clamp, P/N 15590333, are now available for 1983-85 T Trucks to repair this condition.
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1. Position the steering column shift ;ever in neutral gate notch.
2. Set transmission lever (A) in neutral detent.
3. Assemble clamp spring washer, screw and swivel clamp to transmission control lever (B) and control rod.
4. Hold swivel clamp (C) flush against transmission control lever (B) and finger tighten clamping screw against rod.
No force should be exerted in either direction on the rod or trans- mission control lever (B) while tightening the clamping screw.
5. Tighten screw to 16 to 21 ft. lbs.
6. With shift lever in the park (P) position, the parking pawl should freely engage within the reaction carrier internal gear lugs. The vehicle should only be able to be started in park (P) or neutral (N) positions. The shift indicator needle should align properly with all ranges.
