General Motors has determined that certain 1985 Chevrolet "S/T" Light Duty Trucks equipped with a 2.8L V6 (B) engine code, automatic transmission and California emissions system were built without a "Torque Converter Clutch (TCC)" wiring harness.
The omission of a "Torque Converter Clutch (TCC)" wiring harness will not allow the torque converter clutch to engage. This can cause excessive heat build up which may result in premature transmission failure.

Involved vehicles have been identified by Vehicle Identification Number Computer Listings. Computer listings contain the complete Vehicle Iden- tification Number, owner name and address data, and are furnished to the involved dealers with the campaign bulletin. Owner name and address data furnished will enable dealers to follow-up with owners involved in this campaign.
These listings may contain owner names and addresses obtained from State Motor Vehicle Registration Records. The use of such motor vehicle regis- tration data for any other purpose is a violation of law in several states. Accordingly, you are urged to limit the use of this listing to the follow-up necessary to complete this campaign. Any dealer not receiving a computer listing with the campaign bulletin was not shipped any involved vehicles.
Owners will be notified of this campaign on their vehicles by Chevrolet Motor Division (see copy of Owner Letter included with this bulletin).
Dealers are to service all vehicles subject to this campaign at no charge to owners, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership, from this time forward.
Whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign is taken into your new or used vehicle inventory, or it is in your dealership for service in the future, you should take the steps necessary to be sure the campaign correction has been made before reselling or releasing the vehicle.
Owners of vehicles recently sold from your new vehicle inventory are to be contacted by the dealer, and arrangements made to make the required modification according to instructions contained in this bulletin.
Parts required to complete this modification are to be obtained from your Chevrolet Zone Service Department.
If vehicle is equipped with cruise control (RPO K34), inspect to determine if transmission torque converter wire, P/N 12038160, has been previously installed and connected to cruise control vacuum release valve, P/N 22509432, as shown in Figure 1. If wire and valve have been correctly installed, no correction is required.
If vehicle is not equipped with cruise control, inspect to determine if the transmission torque converter clutch wire, P/N 12038160, has been previously installed and connected to stop lamp switch, P/N 25504628, as shown in Figure 2. If wire and switch have been correctly installed, no correction is required.
If inspection reveals vehicle requires wiring harness and switch, follow the procedure identified below:
1. With ignition key in "off" position, open hood and disconnect negative battery cable.
2. Remove center trim panel, located under the steering column. If vehicle is equipped with custom trim package, it will be necessary to first remove the noise insulator panel located below the center trim panel.
Vehicle Equipped With Cruise Control (RPO K34)
1. Disconnect vacuum hose from cruise control vacuum release valve (located adjacent to stop lamp switch). Remove vacuum release valve and discard.
2. Install black colored male connector plug of new wire assembly P/N 12038160, into I/P harness connector (see Figure 1).
3. Install clear colored connector plug or new wire assembly into fuse panel cavity marked "IGN."
4. Secure new wire assembly to I/P harness, as shown in Figure 1, with two new tie straps (P/N 11501906).
5. Connect remaining clear colored plug of new wire assembly and cruise control vacuum hose to new cruise control vacuum release valve, P/N 25509432, (see Figure 1). Install valve into stop lamp switch mounting bracket and adjust (reference Figure 3 for instruction).
6. Install new U-Nut on center trim panel. Reinstall center trim panel.
7. Route remaining portion of new wire assembly under stop lamp switch and cruise control vacuum release valve. If vehicle is equipped with noise insulator panel, route new wire assembly "ALDL" connector lead through cut out and install noise insulator panel.
8. Position new wire assembly "ALDL" connector so that connector socket points towards the passenger side of vehicle and connector bracket hole aligns with center trim panel, new U-Nut and noise insulator panel if equipped. While holding connector, install new screw through connector bracket and noise insulator panel if equipped into new U-Nut and tighten.
9. Reinstall negative battery cable, install campaign completion label and close hood.
Vehicles Not Equipped With Cruise Control
1. Disconnect I/P harness plug from stop lamp switch. Discard stop lamp switch.
2. Install black colored male connector plug of new wire assembly, P/N 12038160, into I/P harness connector (see Figure 2).
3. Install clear colored male connector plug of new wire assembly into fuse panel cavity marked "IGN."
4. Secure new wire assembly to I/P harness, as shown in Figure 2, with two new tie straps.
5. Connect I/P harness plug that was disconnected and clear female connector plug of new harness to new stop lamp switch, P/N 25504528 (see Figure 2).
Install and adjust new stop lamp switch (reference 1985 Light Duty Truck Service Manual, Page 8B-17, for instructions).
Follow steps 6 thru 9 to complete Service Procedure.
Each vehicle modified in accordance with the instructions outlined in this Product Campaign Bulletin will require a "Campaigan Identification Label." Each label provides a space to include the five digit dealer code of the dealer performing the campaign service. This information may be inserted with a typewriter or ballpoint pen.
Each "Campaign Identification Label" is to be located on the radiator core support in an area which will be visible when the vehicle is brought in for periodic servicing by the owner.
Apply "Campaign Identification Label" only on a clean dry surface.

Dear Chevrolet Owner:
General Motors has determined that certain 1985 Chevrolet "S/T" Light Duty Trucks equipped with a 2.8L V6 (B) engine code, automatic transmission and California emissions system were built without a "Torque Converter Clutch (TCC)" wiring harness.
The omission of a "Torque Converter Clutch (TCC)" wiring harness will not allow the torque converter clutch to engage. This can cause excessive heat build up which may result in premature transmission failure.
To correct this condition, when required, please contact your Chevrolet dealer to arrange a service date to install the missing Torque Converter Clutch wiring harness and associated parts on your vehicle. This service will be performed at no charge to you.
Instructions for making the correction(s) have been sent to your dealer. The labor time to perform this service is approximately 20 minutes. Please allow additional time for your dealer to process your vehicle.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
