Verify that the starter solenoid does not click.

Does the starter solenoid operate normally?

  1. Place the transmission in the PARK position (A/T) or actuate the clutch pedal (M/T).
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the START position.
  3. Measure the voltage between the starter solenoid terminal S to engine ground.

Is the voltage greater than the specified value?

9.5 V

  1. Remove the STARTER relay from the underhood fuse block.
  2. Test for voltage from the STARTER relay socket cavity 30 to ground.

Is the voltage greater than the specified value?

9.5 V

Test for voltage at the STARTER relay socket cavity 85 to ground.

Is the voltage greater than the specified value?

9.5 V

Test for voltage between the STARTER relay socket cavity 85 and cavity 86.

  1. Place the transmission in the PARK position (A/T) or actuate the clutch pedal (M/T).
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the START position.
  3. Measure the voltage between the STARTER relay socket cavity 85 to ground.

Is the voltage greater than the specified value?

9.5 V

Is the vehicle equipped with a manual transmission?

  1. Disconnect the clutch pedal position switch connector.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the START position.
  3. Measure the voltage from the clutch pedal position switch connector cavity A to ground.

Is the voltage greater than the specified value?

9.5 V

  1. Engage the park brake.
  2. Actuate the clutch pedal with the transmission in NEUTRAL.
  3. Connect a fused jumper between the fused jumper between the clutch pedal position switch connector cavity A and cavity C.
  4. Turn the ignition switch to the START position.

Does the engine crank?

  1. Disconnect the Park/Neutral Position and Backup Lamp Switch connector.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the START position.
  3. Measure the voltage between the Park/Neutral Position and Backup Lamp Switch connector C1 cavity E and ground.

Is the voltage greater than the specified value?

9.5 V

  1. Connect a fused jumper between the Park/Neutral Position and Backup Lamp Switch connector C1 cavity E and cavity G.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the START position.

Does the engine crank?

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the START position.
  2. Measure the voltage from the ignition switch C211 cavity D1 to ground.

Is the voltage greater than the specified value?

9.5 V

Is the voltage greater than the specified value?

  1. Clean the starter motor mounting surfaces and the bolts.
  2. Place the transmission in the PARK position (A/T) or actuate the clutch pedal (M/T).
  3. Turn the ignition switch to the START position.

Repair the open in CKT 6 (PPL) between the STARTER relay and the starter solenoid Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Repair the open in CKT 350 (BLK) between the STARTER relay and G102 Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

  1. Adjust the clutch pedal position switch.
  2. Engage the park brake.
  3. Actuate the clutch pedal with the transmission in NEUTRAL.
  4. Connect a fused jumper between the clutch pedal position switch connector cavity A and cavity C.
  5. Turn the ignition switch to the START position.

Does the engine crank?
