Transfer Case Output Shaft Seal Replacement Rear

Tools Required

J 29162 Rear Output Shaft Seal Installer.

1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
2. If equipped, remove the transfer case shields. Refer to Shield Replacement .
3. Remove rear propeller shaft. Refer to One-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement or to Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.



4. Remove the rear output shaft seal.

1. Install the seal.

1.1.	Lubricate the seal mating surface with Automatic Transfer Case Oil GM P/N 12378396.

1.2.	Install the seal using the J 29162 .

2. Install the rear propeller shaft. Refer to One-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement or to Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
3. Check the transfer case oil level and add oil as necessary. Refer to Oil Replacement .
4. If equipped, install the transfer case shields. Refer to Shield Replacement .
5. Lower the vehicle.

Transfer Case Output Shaft Seal Replacement Front

Tools Required

1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
2. If equipped, remove the transfer case shield. Refer to Shield Replacement .
3. Remove front propeller shaft. Refer to Front Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
4. Remove the transfer case front output shaft dust seal.



5. Remove the transfer case front output shaft seal.

1. Install the J 44636-2 on the transfer case front output shaft.



2. Install the transfer case front output shaft seal on the J 44636-2 .



3. Using the J 44636-1 , install the transfer case front output shaft seal.
4. Remove the J 44636-1 from the transfer case front output shaft.



5. Remove the J 44636-2 from the transfer case front output shaft.



6. Install the transfer case front output shaft dust seal.
7. Install the front propeller shaft. Refer to Front Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
8. Check the transfer case oil level and add oil as necessary. Refer to Oil Replacement .
9. If equipped, install the transfer case shield. Refer to Shield Replacement .
10. Lower the vehicle.
