Removal Procedure

    Caution: Refer to SIR Caution in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 280860 Size: SH
  1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling in SIR.
  2. Remove the knee bolster trim panel. Refer to Driver Knee Bolster Panel Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gages and Console.
  3. Remove the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
  4. Remove the tilt steering column lever (1) from steering column (2).

  5. Remove the retaining screws (1) that secure the lower trim cover (2) to the steering column.
  6. For column shift vehicles, remove the shifter boot from the lower trim cover.

    7. Object Number: 328807 Size: SH
  7. Remove the lower trim cover by tilting the cover down and sliding the cover back in order to disengage the locking tabs.

    8. Object Number: 415299 Size: SH
  8. Remove the retaining screws (1)from the upper steering column trim cover (2).
  9. For column shift vehicles, remove the shifter boot from the trim cover of the upper steering column.
  10. Remove the upper steering column trim cover  (2).

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 415299 Size: SH
  1. Install the upper steering column trim cover (2).
  2. For column shift vehicles, install the shifter boot to the trim cover of the upper steering column.

    3. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the retaining screws (1) to the upper steering column trim cover (2).

    4. Tighten
    Tighten the screw to 1.5 N·m (13 lb in).

  4. Install the lower steering column trim cover by matching the tabs slots on the trim cover with the locking tabs on the upper trim cover and tilting the lower trim cover up.
  5. For column shift vehicles, install the shifter boot to the lower trim cover.

    6. Object Number: 415298 Size: SH
  6. Install the retaining screws (1) to the lower steering column trim cover (2).

    7. Tighten
    Tighten the screws to 3.5 N·m (31 lb in).

  7. Install the tilt steering column lever (1) to the steering column (2).
  8. Install the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
  9. Install the knee bolster trim panel. Refer to Driver Knee Bolster Panel Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gages and Console.
  10. Enable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling in SIR.
