    • J 6219 Pitman Shaft Seal Installer

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 609534  Size: SH
  1. Remove the power steering gear. Refer to Steering Gear Replacement .
  2. Remove the pitman shaft and side cover. Refer to Steering Gear Pitman Shaft and Housing Cover Replacement - Off Vehicle .
  3. Clean the exposed end of the pitman shaft.
  4. Use a wire brush to clean the pitman shaft splines.
  5. Clean the steering gear housing.
  6. Remove the pitman shaft boot (3) from the steering gear housing (1).
  7. Important: Do not score the housing bore when prying out the seals and washers.

  8. Remove the pitman shaft dust seal (2) from the steering gear housing (1).

  9. Object Number: 412380  Size: SH
  10. Remove the pitman shaft retaining ring (2) from the steering gear housing (1) using J 4245 .

  11. Object Number: 609531  Size: SH
  12. Remove the backup washer (3) from the steering gear housing (1).
  13. Pry the pitman shaft seal (2) from the steering gear housing (1) using a screwdriver.
  14. Inspect the housing for burrs and remove if necessary.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 609531  Size: SH
  1. Coat the pitman shaft seal (2) and backup washer (3) with grease.
  2. Install the pitman shaft seal (2) onto the steering gear housing (1) using J 6219 .
  3. Install the backup washer (3) onto the steering gear housing (1).

  4. Object Number: 412380  Size: SH
  5. Install the pitman shaft retaining ring (2) onto the steering gearing housing (1) using J 4245 .

  6. Object Number: 609534  Size: SH
  7. Coat the dust seal with grease.
  8. Install the dust seal (2) onto the steering gear housing (1).
  9. Install the pitman shaft boot (3) onto the steering gear housing (1)
  10. Install the pitman shaft and side cover. Refer to Steering Gear Pitman Shaft and Housing Cover Replacement - Off Vehicle .
  11. Install the power steering gear. Refer to Steering Gear Replacement .
