Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 543834  Size: SH
  1. Remove the fan clutch from the water pump. Refer to Fan Clutch Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  2. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 4.3L.
  3. Remove the power steering pump pulley. Refer to Power Steering Pump Pulley Replacement .
  4. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  5. Remove the steering linkage shield. Refer to Steering Linkage Shield Replacement in Steering Linkage.
  6. Place a drain pan below the pump.
  7. Disconnect the power steering pressure hose from the power steering pump.

  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls - 4.3L.
  11. Disconnect the power steering cooler hose from the power steering pump.
  12. Cap the power steering pump hoses.

  14. Remove the power steering pump filler neck tube mounting bolt.
  15. Remove the power steering pump filler neck tube.

  17. Remove the power steering pump rear bracket nut from the engine stud.
  18. Remove the power steering pump lower mounting nut from the engine stud.

  19. Object Number: 288829  Size: SH
  20. Remove the power steering pump front mounting bolts.
  21. Remove the power steering pump.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 288829  Size: SH
  1. Install the power steering pump.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the power steering pump front mounting bolts.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the power steering pump front mounting bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  5. Install the power steering pump rear mounting bracket nut to the engine stud.
  6. Install the power steering pump lower mounting nut to engine stud.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the power steering pump rear mounting bracket nut and the power steering pump lower mounting nut to 41 N·m (31 lb ft).

  8. Install the power steering pump filler neck tube mounting bolt.
  9. Install the power steering pump filler neck tube.
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the power steering pump filler neck tube bolt to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

  11. Connect the power steering cooler hose to the power steering pump.
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the power steering cooler hose to the power steering pump clamp to 2 N·m (18 lb in).

  13. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  14. Connect the power steering gear pressure hose to the power steering pump.
  15. Tighten
    Tighten the power steering gear pressure hose to the power steering pump to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  16. Install the steering linkage shield. Refer to Steering Linkage Shield Replacement in Steering Linkage.
  17. Lower the vehicle.
  18. Install the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls - 4.3L.
  19. Install the power steering pump pulley. Refer to Power Steering Pump Pulley Replacement .
  20. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 4.3L.
  21. Install the fan clutch to the water pump. Refer to Fan Clutch Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  22. Fill the power steering system.
  23. Bleed the system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .
  24. Inspect the hoses for clearance.
