Removal Procedure
- Remove the power steering gear. Refer to
Steering Gear Replacement
in Power Steering System.
- Install the power steering gear into the vise.
- Remove the pitman arm
nut (4) and washer (3) from the pitman arm shaft.
Notice: Do not hammer on the pitman arm, pitman arm shaft or puller. Damage
to the pitman arm or steering gear may result.
- Disconnect the pitman arm from the pitman shaft using J 6632-01
or J 29107-A
.
- Inspect the following items:
• | The pitman arm ball stud threads for damage |
• | The pitman arm ball stud seals for excessive wear |
- Clean the pitman arm ball stud threads.
Installation Procedure
- Install the pitman arm
(2) to the pitman arm shaft.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the pitman
arm washer (3) and nut (4) to the pitman arm shaft.
Tighten
Tighten the pitman arm nut to 250 N·m (185 lb ft).
- Remove the power steering gear from the vise.
- Install the power steering gear. Refer to
Steering Gear Replacement
in Power Steering System.
