Removal Procedure

    Caution: Refer to SIR Caution in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 421398  Size: SH
  1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling in SIR.
  2. Remove the turn signal cancel cam and upper bearing inner race. Refer to Turn Signal Cancel Cam and Upper Bearing Thrust Washer .
  3. Disconnect the connectors from the windshield wiper and washer switch assembly (1), if needed.
  4. Remove the switch assembly (1) using the following procedure:
  5. 4.1. Press on the locking tabs of the windshield wiper and washer switch assembly (1).
    4.2. Pull the windshield wiper and washer switch assembly (1) out of the signal switch housing assembly.

  6. Disconnect the connectors from the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly (1), if needed.
  7. Remove the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly (1) using the following procedure:
  8. 6.1. Press on the locking tabs of the inflatable restraint signal switch assembly (1).
    6.2. Pull the switch assembly (1) out of the signal switch housing assembly.

    Important: When removing the horn contact, the horn contact spring may become a projectile. Remove slowly.

  9. Remove the horn contact (2) from the signal switch housing assembly (1) using the following procedure:
  10. 7.1. Turn the horn contact plunger to release the plunger from the signal switch housing assembly (1).
    7.2. Remove the horn contact (2) and spring.

  11. Remove the 2 washer head screws (1) from the signal switch housing assembly (2).
  12. Slide the housing assembly (2) off of the steering shaft assembly.

Installation Procedure

  1. Slide the signal switch housing assembly (2) onto the steering shaft assembly.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the 2 washer head screws (1) into the signal switch housing assembly (2).
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the screws to 3.5 N·m (31 lb in).

  5. Insert the horn contact spring and the horn contact (2) into the signal switch housing assembly (1).
  6. Insert the horn contact plunger into the housing assembly (1) and turn to lock the plunger in place.

  8. Insert the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly (1) into the signal switch housing assembly until the tabs lock in place.
  9. Connect the connectors on the switch assembly (1), if needed.

  11. Insert the windshield wiper and washer switch assembly (1) into the signal switch housing assembly.
  12. Connect the connectors on the windshield wiper and washer switch assembly (1), if needed.
  13. Install the turn signal cancel cam and upper bearing inner race. Refer to Turn Signal Cancel Cam and Upper Bearing Thrust Washer .
  14. Enable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling in SIR.
