J 36660-A Torque Angle Meter

Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  2. Drain the engine coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
  3. Remove the engine cooling fan assembly. Refer to Fan Clutch Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  4. Remove the generator mounting bracket. Refer to Generator Bracket Replacement in Engine Electrical.

  6. Remove the generator mounting bracket stud from the cylinder head.
  7. Remove the lower intake manifold. Refer to Lower Intake Manifold Replacement .
  8. Remove the exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement - Right Side in Engine Exhaust.
  9. Remove the oil level indicator and tube. Refer to Oil Level Indicator and Tube Replacement .

  11. Remove the spark plug wire harness and spark plug wire support.

  12. Object Number: 395663  Size: SH
  13. Remove the bolt and the ground strap from the rear of the cylinder head.

  14. Object Number: 375426  Size: SH
  15. Remove the bolt and the ground wires from the rear of the cylinder head.
  16. Secure the ground strap and the ground wires out of the way.
  17. Remove the valve pushrods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .

  19. Remove the spark plugs. Refer to Spark Plug Replacement in Engine Controls - 4.3L.

  21. Remove the cylinder head bolts.

    Notice: After removal, place the cylinder head on 2 wood blocks in order to prevent damage to the sealing surfaces.

  23. Remove the cylinder head.

  25. Remove and discard the cylinder head gasket.

  27. Remove the cylinder head locator pins, if required.
  28. Clean the engine block and the cylinder head sealing surfaces.
  29. Notice: Clean all dirt, debris, and coolant from the engine block cylinder head bolt holes. Failure to remove all foreign material may result in damaged threads, improperly tightened fasteners or damage to components.

  30. Clean the cylinder head bolts and the engine block bolt holes.
  31. For further service to the cylinder head refer to the following:
  32. •  Cylinder Head Disassemble
    •  Cylinder Head Cleaning and Inspection
    •  Valve Guide Reaming, and Valve and Seat Grinding
    •  Cylinder Head Assemble

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 334314  Size: SH
  1. Clean the cylinder head gasket surfaces on the engine block.
  2. Install the cylinder head locator pins, if necessary.
  3. Clean the cylinder head gasket surfaces on the cylinder head.

  4. Object Number: 334312  Size: SH

    Important: Do not use any type sealer on the cylinder head gasket (unless specified).

  5. Install the NEW cylinder head gasket in position over the locator pins.

  7. Install the cylinder head onto the engine block.
  8. Guide the cylinder head carefully into place over the locator pins and the cylinder head gasket.

  9. Apply sealant GM P/N 12346004 or equivalent to the threads of the cylinder head bolts.
  10. Install the cylinder head bolts finger tight.

  11. Object Number: 5132  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  12. Tighten the cylinder head bolts in sequence on the first pass.
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts in sequence on the first pass to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).

  14. Use theJ 36660-A in order to tighten the cylinder head bolts in sequence on the final pass.
  15. Tighten

        • Tighten the long bolts (1, 4, 5, 8, and 9) on the final pass in sequence to 75 degrees.
        • Tighten the medium bolts (12 and 13) on the final pass in sequence to 65 degrees.
        • Tighten the short bolts (2, 3, 6, 7, 10, and 11) on the final pass in sequence to 55 degrees.
  16. Install the valve pushrods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .
  17. Install the lower intake manifold. Refer to Lower Intake Manifold Replacement .

  19. Install the spark plug wire harness and the spark plug wire support and bolts.
  20. Tighten
    Tighten only the rear spark plug wire support bolt to 12 N·m (106 lb in).

  21. Remove the front spark plug wire support bolt.
  22. The front spark plug wire support bolt is used to fasten the oil level indicator tube, and will be installed within the oil level indicator tube installation procedure.

  23. Install the spark plugs. Refer to Spark Plug Replacement in Engine Controls - 4.3L.
  24. Install the oil level indicator tube and indicator. Refer to Oil Level Indicator and Tube Replacement .
  25. Install the exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement - Right Side in Engine Exhaust.

  26. Object Number: 375426  Size: SH
  27. Install the bolt and the ground wires to the rear of the cylinder head.
  28. Tighten
    Tighten the ground wire bolt to 35 N·m (26 lb ft).

  29. Install the bolt and the ground strap to the rear of the cylinder head.
  30. Tighten
    Tighten the ground strap bolt to 35 N·m (26 lb ft).

  31. Install the stud for the generator mounting bracket.
  32. Tighten
    Tighten the generator mounting bracket stud to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

  33. Install the generator mounting bracket. Refer to Generator Bracket Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  34. Install the engine cooling fan assembly. Refer to Fan Clutch Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  35. Connect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  36. Fill the engine coolant system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
