CAMPAIGN: TIRE PRESS. LABEL INCORRECT VEHICLE CAPACITY

THE NATIONAL TRAFFIC AND MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY ACT, AS AMENDED, PROVIDES THAT EACH VEHICLE WHICH IS SUBJECT TO A RECALL CAMPAIGN OF THIS TYPE MUST BE ADEQUATELY REPAIRED WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME AFTER THE OWNER HAS TENDERED IT FOR REPAIR. A FAILURE TO ADEQUATELY REPAIR WITHIN 60 DAYS AFTER TENDER OF A VEHICLE IS PRIMA FACIE EVIDENCE OF FAILURE TO REPAIR WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME. IF THE CONDITION IS NOT ADEQUATELY REPAIRED WITHIN A REASONALBE TIME, THE OWNER MAY BE ENTITLED TO AN IDENTICAL OR REASONABLY EQUIVALENT VEHICLE AT NO CHARGE, OR TO A REFUND OF THE PURCHASE PRICE LESS A REASONABLE ALLOWANCE FOR DEPRECIATION.

IN ORDER TO AVOID HAVING TO PROVIDE THESE BURDENSOME SOLUTIONS, EVERY EFFORT MUST BE MADE TO PROMPTLY SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT WITH EACH OWNER AND TO REPAIR HIS VEHICLE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. AS YOU WILL SEE IN READING THE ATTACHED COPY OF THE LETTER WHICH IS BEING SENT TO OWNERS, THE OWNER IS BEING INSTRUCTED TO CONTACT THE NEAREST CHEVROLET ZONE OFFICE IF HIS DEALER DOES NOT REMEDY THE CONDITION WITHIN 5 DAYS OF THE MUTUALLY AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE. IF THE CONDITION IS NOT REMEDIED WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME, HE IS INSTRUCTED ON HOW TO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION.

CONDITION INVOLVED

GENERAL MOTORS HAS DETERMINED THAT SOME 1980 CHEVROLET CAMAROS FAIL TO CONFORM TO FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 110, "TIRE SELECTION AND RIMS." A REQUIREMENT OF THIS STANDARD IS THAT A PLACARD WHICH PROVIDES TIRE SIZE, TIRE INFLATION PRESSURE AND LOADING DATA SHALL BE PERMANENTLY AFFIXED TO PASSENGER CARS. A LABEL LOCATED ON THE REAR EDGE OF THE LEFT DOOR PROVIDES THIS INFORMATION FOR 1980 CAMAROS; HOWEVER, SOME OF THESE VEHICLES WERE PRODUCED WITH LABELS SHOWING AN INCORRECT "VEHICLE CAPACITY WEIGHT" INSTEAD OF THE CORRECT FIGURE OF 800 POUNDS. LABELS INDICATING THE CORRECT INFORMATION ARE REQUIRED TO PREVENT TIRE OVERLOADING.

TO CORRECT THIS CONDITION THE PROPER TIRE PRESSURE LABEL MUST BE INSTALLED ON THE INVOLVED VEHICLES AS OUTLINED IN THE SERVICE PROCEDURE SECTION OF THIS BULLETIN.

VEHICLES INVOLVED

THE FOLLOWING 1980 CHEVROLET CAMAROS ARE THE ONLY VEHICLES INVOLVED: VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER

1P87LAN513180 1P87KAN513212 1P87KAN513181 1P87LAN513184 1S87HAN513182 1P87LAN513291 1P87HAN513183 1P87HAN513308

INVOLVED VEHICLES HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED BY VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER COMPUTER LISTINGS. COMPUTER LISTINGS CONTAIN THE COMPLETE VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER, OWNER NAME AND ADDRESS DATA, AND ARE FURNISHED TO THE INVOLVED DEALERS WITH THE CAMPAIGN BULLETIN. OWNER NAME AND ADDRESS DATA FURNISHED WILL ENABLE DEALERS TO FOLLOWUP WITH OWNERS INVOLVED IN THIS CAMPAIGN.

THESE LISTINGS MAY CONTAIN OWNER NAMES AND ADDRESSES OBTAINED FROM STATE MOTOR VEHICLE REGISTRATION RECORDS. THE USE OF SUCH MOTOR VEHICLE REGISTRATION DATA FOR ANY OTHER PURPOSE IS A VIOLATION OF LAW IN SEVERAL STATES. ACCORDINGLY, YOU ARE URGED TO LIMIT THE USE OF THIS LISTING FOR THE FOLLOW-UP NECESSARY TO COMPLETE THIS CAMPAIGN.

ANY DEALER NOT RECEIVING A COMPUTER LISTING WITH THE CAMPAIGN BULLETIN WAS NOT SHIPPED ANY INVOLVED VEHICLES.

OWNER NOTIFICATION

OWNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED OF THIS CAMPAIGN ON THEIR VEHICLES BY CHEVROLET MOTOR DIVISION (SEE COPY OF OWNER LETTER INCLUDED WITH THIS BULLETIN.)

DEALER CAMPAIGN RESPONSIBILITY

THIS RECALL CAMPAIGN IS TO BE PERFORMED AT NO CHARGE TO OWNERS ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES REGARDLESS OF TIME, MILEAGE, OR OWNERSHIP. DEALERS ARE TO INSPECT AND CORRECT ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES IN NEW AND USED CAR STOCK PRIOR TO THEIR SALE.

WHENEVER A VEHICLE SUBJECT TO THIS CAMPAIGN IS TAKEN INTO YOUR NEW OR USED VEHICLE INVENTORY, OR IT IS IN YOUR DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICE IN THE FUTURE, YOU SHOULD TAKE THE STEPS NECESSARY TO BE SURE THE CAMPAIGN CORRECTION HAS BEEN MADE.

THIS BULLETIN IS NOTICE TO YOU THAT THE NEW MOTOR VEHICLES INCLUDED IN THIS CAMPAIGN MAY NOT COMPLY WITH THE STANDARD IDENTIFIED ABOVE. UNDER SECTION 108 OF THE NATIONAL TRAFFIC AND MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY ACT, IT IS ILLEGAL FOR A DEALER TO SELL A NEW MOTOR VEHICLE WHICH THE DEALER KNOWS DOES NOT COMPLY WITH AN APPLICABLE FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD. AS A CONSEQUENCE, IF YOU SELL ANY OF THESE MOTOR VEHICLES WITHOUT FIRST PERFORMING THE CAMPAIGN CORRECTION, YOUR DEALERSHIP MAY BE SUBJECT TO A CIVIL PENALTY UP TO $1,000 FOR EACH SUCH SALE.

REPLACEMENT VEHICLE TIRE PRESSURE LABEL INFORMATION

DEALERS WILL BE CONTACTED BY THE CHEVROLET ZONE SERVICE MANAGER PRIOR TO MAKING AN APPOINTMENT WITH AN INVOLVED OWNER. THE ZONE OFFICE WILL SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT TIME MUTUALLY AGREEABLE TO ALL PARTIES CONCERNED FOR THE INSTALLATION OF THE NEW LABEL, IN ORDER TO MINIMIZE THE INCONVENIENCE TO THE OWNER. NEW TIRE PRESSURE LABELS HAVE BEEN FURNISHED TO EACH INVOLVED CHEVROLET ZONE SERVICE MANAGER.

UNDER THE DIRECT PERSONAL SUPERVISION OF A CHEVROLET WHOLESALE REPRESENTATIVE, EACH VEHICLE INVOLVED WILL BE INSPECTED AND CORRECTED AS FOLLOWS:

- PRIOR TO MAKING THE CORRECTION, THE CHEVROLET WHOLESALE PERSONNEL MUST BE CERTAIN THAT THE VEHICLE DATA (TIRE PRESSURE LABEL) CORRESPONDS TO THE INVOLVED VEHICLE BEING CORRECTED.

- VEHICLE TIRE PRESSURE LABELS ARE LOCATED ON THE REAR EDGE OF THE LEFT DOOR.

- VEHICLE TIRE PRESSURE LABELS WITH THE INCORRECT TIRE PRESSURE INFORMATION WILL BE REMOVED FROM EACH INVOLVED VEHICLE.

- VEHICLE TIRE PRESSURE LABELS WITH THE CORRECT INFORMATION MUST THEN BE AFFIXED TO THE INVOLVED VEHICLE IN THE SAME LOCATION.

THE DEALER MAY PERFORM THE ACTUAL LABOR, BUT ONLY UNDER THE DIRECT SUPERVISION OF THE CHEVROLET WHOLESALE REPRESENTATIVE.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
