CAMPAIGN: A/C EVAP. PIPE AND DIPSTICK TUBE INTERFERENCE

GENERAL MOTORS HAS DETERMINED THAT SOME 1980 CAMAROS EQUIPPED WITH AIR CONDITIONING MAY HAVE INTERFERENCE BETWEEN THE A/C EVAPORATOR CORE ALUMINUM INLET PIPE AND THE ENGINE OIL STEEL DIPSTICK TUBE ASSEMBLY. AS A RESULT, THE ALUMINUM INLET PIPE MAY WEAR THROUGH AT THE POINT OF CONTACT WITH THE DIPSTICK TUBE ASSEMBLY.

TO CORRECT THIS CONDITION, DEALERS ARE TO INSPECT AND, IF REQUIRED, REPOSITION THE A/C EVAPORATOR PIPE. ALSO, REPLACE THE EVAPORATOR CORE AND INLET PIPE ASSEMBLY ON THOSE VEHICLES WHERE THE INTERFERENCE CONDITION HAS CAUSED A REFRIGERATION LEAK.

VEHICLES INVOLVED

INVOLVED ARE CERTAIN 1980 CHEVROLET CAMARO MODELS EQUIPPED WITH RPO C60 AND EITHER V6 OR V8 ENGINES EXCEPT THE LD5 (231 CUBIC INCH V6) WITHIN THE FOLLOWING VEHICLE BREAKPOINTS:

INVOLVED VEHICLES HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED BY VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER COMPUTER LISTINGS. COMPUTER LISTINGS CONTAIN THE COMPLETE VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER, OWNER NAME AND ADDRESS DATA, AND ARE FURNISHED TO THE INVOLVED DEALERS WITH THE CAMPAIGN BULLETIN. OWNER NAME AND ADDRESS DATA FURNISHED WILL ENABLE DEALERS TO FOLLOW UP WITH OWNERS INVOLVED IN THIS CAMPAIGN.

ANY DEALER NOT RECEIVING A COMPUTER LISTING WITH THE CAMPAIGN BULLETIN WAS NOT SHIPPED ANY INVOLVED VEHICLES.

OWNER NOTIFICATION

OWNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED OF THIS CAMPAIGN ON THEIR VEHICLES BY CHEVROLET MOTOR DIVISION (SEE COPY OF OWNER LETTER INCLUDED WITH THIS BULLETIN).

DEALER CAMPAIGN RESPONSIBILITY

THIS RECALL CAMPAIGN IS TO BE PERFORMED AT NO CHARGE TO OWNERS ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES REGARDLESS OF TIME, MILEAGE, OR OWNERSHIP. DEALERS ARE TO INSPECT AND CORRECT ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES IN NEW AND USED CAR STOCK PRIOR TO THEIR SALE.

WHENEVER A VEHICLE SUBJECT TO THIS CAMPAIGN IS TAKEN INTO YOUR NEW OR USED VEHICLE INVENTORY, OR IT IS IN YOUR DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICE IN THE FUTURE, YOU SHOULD TAKE THE STEPS NECESSARY TO BE SURE THE CAMPAIGN CORRECTION HAS BEEN MADE.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

INSPECT FOR CLEARANCE BETWEEN THE EVAPORATOR INLET PIPE AND THE ENGINE OIL DIPSTICK TUBE ASSEMBLY. THE CLEARANCE MUST BE A MINIMUM OF 3/4 INCH (SEE FIGURE 1). IF CLEARANCE IS LESS THAN 3/4 INCH, FOLLOW SERVICE PROCEDURE.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. LOOSEN THE CLAMP HOLDING THE INLET PIPE TO THE SUPPORT BRACKET.

2. EXAMINE THE PIPE FOR SIGNS OF WEAR; IF WEAR IS EVIDENT, CHECK FOR REFRIGERATION LEAK USING A RECOMMENDED LEAK DETECTOR. IF A LEAK IS FOUND, REPLACE THE EVAPORATOR CORE MAINTAINING THE MINIMUM CLEARANCE SPECIFIED ABOVE AND RECHARGE THE SYSTEM AS OUTLINED IN THE CHEVROLET SERVICE MANUAL, SECTION 1B29.

3. IF NO LEAK IS EVIDENT, REPOSITION THE EVAPORATOR INLET PIPE TO OBTAIN THE MINIMUM CLEARANCE SPECIFIED (SEE FIGURE 1.) THE MINIMUM CLEARANCE MUST BE PRESENT WITH THE CLAMP LOOSE.

4. TIGHTEN THE CLAMP SECURING THE INLET PIPE TO THE SUPPORT BRACKET.

PARTS INFORMATION

PARTS REQUIRED TO COMPLETE THE MODIFICATION, WHEN REQUIRED, ARE TO BE OBTAINED FROM YOUR GENERAL MOTORS PARTS DISTRIBUTION CENTER. THE P/N FOR THE A/C EVAPORATOR CORE IS 3043508.

DESCRIPTION: REPLACE EVAPORATOR CORE V6 - INCLUDES CHARGING SYSTEM. 00 V0402 2.7 HOURS .1 HOURS

DESCRIPTION: REPLACE EVAPORATOR CORE V8 - INCLUDES CHARGING SYSTEM.

*DEALERS WILL AUTOMATICALLY RECEIVE .1 HOURS DEALER ADMINISTRATIVE ALLOWANCE ASSOCIATED WITH THIS CAMPAIGN.

DEALERS WILL AUTOMATICALLY BE CREDITED FOR 3 POUNDS OUNCES REFRIGERATION 12 AND 3 OUNCES 525 VISCOSITY REFRIGERANT OIL WHEN USING FAILED LABOR OPERATION CODES V0401 OR V0402 IN CONJUNCTION WITH THIS CAMPAIGN.

CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL

EACH VEHICLE MODIFIED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE INSTRUCTIONS OUTLINED IN THIS PRODUCT CAMPAIGN BULLETIN WILL REQUIRE A "CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL." EACH LABEL PROVIDES A SPACE TO INCLUDE THE FIVE DIGIT DEALER CODE OF THE DEALER PERFORMING THE CAMPAIGN SERVICE. THIS INFORMATION MAY BE INSERTED WITH A TYPEWRITER OR BALLPOINT PEN.

EACH "CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL" IS TO BE LOCATED ON THE RADIATOR CORE SUPPORT IN AN AREA WHICH WILL BE VISIBLE WHEN THE VEHICLE IS BROUGHT IN FOR PERIODIC SERVICING BY THE OWNER.

APPLY "CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL" ONLY ON A CLEAN DRY SURFACE.

ADMINISTRATIVE PROCEDURE

THE APPROPRIATE CAMPAIGN HANDLING AND ADMINISTRATIVE PROCEDURE MAY BE FOUND IN THE CHEVROLET SERVICE POLICIES AND PROCEDURES MANAUL, SECTION IV, PAGES 1 AND 2, DATED OCTOBER, 1979 IN YOUR DEALERSHIP.
