MOISTURE/CONDENSATION IN EXTERIOR LAMP ASSEMBLIES

MOISTURE MAY ACCUMULATE IN THE TAIL LAMP ASSEMBLIES OF 1978-81 CAMARO MODELS. CONDENSATION MAY OCCUR ON THE LENS UNDER CERTAIN HUMIDITY AND TEMPERATURE CONDITIONS. IN MOST CASES THE CONDENSATION WILL DISAPPEAR WHEN THE LAMPS ARE OPERATED OR AMBIENT AIR TEMPERATURE INCREASES. THE CONDENSATION IS NOT CONSIDERED DETRIMENTAL TO THE LAMP ASSEMBLY AND SERVICE CORRECTION IS NOT REQUIRED. ON VEHICLES WHERE WATER ENTRY IS NOTED AND THE CAUSE IS DETERMINED TO BE THE RESULT OF: CRACKED LENS HEAT WELD SEAM VOIDS BETWEEN LENSES INSUFFICIENT GASKET COMPRESSION LENS MISMATCH AT GASKET SURFACE THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE IS RECOMMENDED: 1.REMOVE TAIL LAMP ASSEMBLY FROM VEHICLE. 2.REMOVE LENS FROM LAMP. INSPECT LENS FOR CRACKS AND HEAT WELD SEAM VOIDS BETWEEN LENSES. INSPECT GASKET FOR PROPER POSITION AND TEARS. REPLACE LENS AND/OR GASKET IF NECESSARY. 3.REMOVE MOSITURE FROM LENS AND HOUSING. 4.APPLY 3M STRIP-CAULK TO GASKET. DO NOT APPLY STRIP-CAULK IN AREA OF VENT NOTCH. SEE ILLUSTRATION. 5.REINSTALL LENS TO HOUSING AND LAMP ASSEMBLY TO VEHICLE. ILLUSTRATION

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
