TWIN LIFT-OFF HATCH ROOF WIND NOISE/WATER LEAK REPAIR

This bulletin is designed to assist dealer personnel in diagnosing and correcting waterleak and windnoise conditions on cars equipped with the Fisher Body twin lift-off hatch roof option.

The technician performing the repairs should personally water test and/or roadtest the vehicle to determine the specific source of the waterleak, noise or windnoise conditions before beginning repair operations. Test results should pinpoint area(s) where repairs are needed.

RECOMMENDED REPAIR MATERIALS

3M 8578, Sure Seal BSC Strip Calk or equivalent is used to seal holes and openings. Sure Seat BSG-B, 3M 80811 adhesive or equivalent is used to retain weatherstrips. Sure Seal CSB, 3M 8648 sealer or equivalent is used for weatherstrip sealing. A paintable body sealer (Flo Grade) such as Sure Seal LSW, 3M 08531 or equivalent should be used to seal seams. The proper locations of these sealers and adhesives are shown on attached figures.

Before adjusting the lift-off panel the door to lock pillar wedge plates must contact. To check wedge plate contact, apply a piece of masking tape over lock pillar wedge plate and close door. If tape is not torn, additional shim(s) are required and checking procedure must be performed after shim(s) are added.

Proper panel alignment and adjustments are essential for good weather sealing. Refer to attached figures for adjustment and installation procedure. After alignment procedures are completed, apply Sure Seal Silicone Lub SSL, 3M 08939 Silicone Lubricant Plus or equivalent to weatherstrip surface. Lift-off panel(s) should be removed and replaced several times and door(s) glass cycled to determine if proper alignment and weather sealing is maintained. If door glass is not adjusted properly, door glass and at belt filler can be adjusted as described in Section 5 of the Fisher Body Service Manual; then a unit watertest should be performed.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
