NEUTRAL GEAR RATTLE 5-SPEED SERVICE PROCEDURE

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1984-85 'F' Car

Some 1984-85 'F' cars with 2.5L engines and 5-speed manual transmissions may exhibit one of two different gear rattle noise conditions which can be described as follows:

CONDITION NO.1 (1984 OR 1985 MODELS):

Neutral Gear Rattle - transmission gear rattle noise experienced with the shift lever in the neutral position and the clutch engaged.

CONDITION NO. 2 (1985 MODEL ONLY):

Overrun Gear Rattle - transmission gear rattle noise experienced during deceleration (overrun) in either 2nd, 3rd, or 4th gears with the clutch engaged.

Condition No. 1 can be corrected as follows:

1. Set idle speed to specification. 2. Replace the following parts:

Clutch Pressure Plate Assembly P/N 14091979 Clutch Driven Disc P/N 14091980

NOTICE: Due to changes in the 1985 clutch assembly, 1985 vehicles will only require changing the clutch driven disc (P/N 14091980) to correct the condition.

Condition No. 2 can be corrected by replacing the following parts:

Shift Lever (Firebird only) P/N 10042197 Clutch Driven Disc (Camaro & Firebird) P/N 14091980

Use applicable labour time and operation number.
