CONDITION: A few 1989 Camaros equipped with the 5.OL TBI (LO3) engine may occasionally stall after a complete stop, or at low speeds during deceleration.
CAUSE: The Electronic Control Module (ECM) uses an input from the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) to determine vehicle speed. The circuit from the optical buffer to the ECM is susceptible to signal oscillations which may give an incorrect VSS signal. If the ECM reads the vehicle speed over the top speed limit, a stall may occur.
CORRECTION: Install Vehicle Speed Sensor Buffer, P/N 16154861.
PROCEDURE
Following applicable service manual sections:
1. Remove lower left side hush panel. 2. Lower steering column (do not remove). 3. Remove front instrument cluster face plate. 4. Remove instrument cluster (to include speedo cable connection behind speedometer). 5. Remove VSS buffer attached to rear of instrument cluster. 6. Replace VSS buffer P/N 16154861. 7. Reinstall cluster and face plate. 8. Reinstall steering column and lower hush panel.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
