INSTRUMENT PANEL SQUEAKS & POPPING NOISE (ADHESIVE FELT)

Subject: CENTER INSTRUMENT PANEL SQUEAK/POPPING NOISE

Model and Year: 1988-91 CAMARO

TO: ALL CHEVROLET DEALERS

Condition: Center instrument panel squeak. Also, center instrument panel popping noise.

Cause: Contact between instrument panel and center console.

Correction:

1. Remove center console by following Service Manual procedures.

2. Place adhesive-backed felt in areas of contact. See Figure.

3. Additionally, measure distance from horizontal felted surface (See Figure) to center of instrument panel wiring harness rosebud retainer. If distance is approximately 15mm (1 1/16 inch), relocate the retainer by drilling a 6mm (1/4 inch) hole in the instrument panel approximately 10 mm (7/16 inch) below the existing hole and moving the rosebud harness fastener to the new hole. See Figure.

4. Reinstall center console using Service Manual procedures.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
