LOW SPEED DRIVEABILITY CODE 22 - REPLACE TPS

Subject: THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR (TPS) LOW SPEED DRIVEABILITY

Model and Year: 1991 CAPRICE, CAMARO WITH 5.OL (VIN CODE E) ENGINE

TO: ALL CHEVROLET DEALERS

Condition:

Some owners of 1991 B and F-cars with the 5.OL V8 engine (VIN E) may comment of a "Service Engine Soon" light with a Code 22 Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) stored, idle surge, low speed hesitation, or rough idle.

Cause:

Plastic mold flash on the internal contact pads causes incorrect TPS output.

Correction:

Follow the normal diagnostics found in section 6E2-A 6E2-B, and 6E2-C2 of the unit repair manual. If the replacement of the TPS is necessary, use kit part number 17112404. Do not use any TPS that is Julian date coded prior to C1350. The Julian date of 135 represents May 15 (135th day of the year), and 0 represents the year 1990 (9=1989).

The Julian date is located on the TPS face, just below the production part number. It can be identified without removing the TPS from the throttle body.

Parts are currently available from GMSPO.

Use applicable labor operations and labor times.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
