A REAR AXLE EXCHANGE PROGRAM IS BEING INITIATED FOR 1991 AND 1992 CAMAROS WITH EITHER A 2.73 OR 3.23 AXLE RATIO. REAR AXLES WILL BE EXCHANGED FOR NOISE CONCERNS ONLY AND THE EXCHANGE PROGRAM WILL BE IN EFFECT FROM AUGUST 3, 1992 THROUGH OCTOBER 30, 1992 FOR CHEVROLET DEALERS IN THE TAMPA AND ATLANTA BRANCHES.
All requirements regarding serviceable and non-serviceable items, warranty claims, processing procedure and shipping instructions are explained below. Your cooperation in following these procedures when your dealership receives a condition comment on an axle will greatly improve the effectiveness of the program. This information should be filed in the "Special Exchange Policy Procedures" manual previously provided.
A. EXCHANGE CRITERIA: --------------------- 1. Any internal axle noise except wheel bearings.
2. Do not drain oil and don't remove differential cover.
B. EXCHANGE PROCEDURE: ---------------------- Once the above preliminary diagnosis is made and an exchange unit is deemed necessary, call your Chevrolet Technical Assistance Network (Transmission - Service Manual/Bulletin Group) at 1-800-227-3175.
- TAN will require the VIN and all information to open a case.
- TAN will arrange with the Buffalo Axle plant to ship a replacement axle within 48 hours. The replacement axle will be complete except for rear axle lube.
- A TAN case number will be provided for each axle exchange. This number must be recorded on the identification card supplied with the replacement axle and be affixed to the replaced axle being returned. Fill out the identification card completely.
- To avoid a chargeback, the exchange unit must be returned to Buffalo within 10 days in the original shipping crate. Failure to return the concerned unit will result in the dealership being billed the value of an exchange unit.
The exchange unit will be shipped with minimum quantity of lube; add lube per specifications. Attached to the exchange unit will be a return shipping label.
C. PREPARATION FOR SHIPPING: ---------------------------- Remove axle assembly as outlined in the 1991 or 1992 service manuals. Remove all plastic shipping plugs and covers from the exchange unit and install them on the removed unit.
Write the TAN reference number on the Dealer repair order.
Place the removed unit into the original shipping container. Include a copy of the Dealer repair order in the original envelope and attach to original axle.
D. SHIPPING INSTRUCTIONS: ------------------------- Place the shipping label over the original container shipping label.
The bill of lading will be complete, except for the date and carrier signature. After the bill of lading has been dated and signed by the carrier, retain the last copy with your repair order and provide the other two copies to the carrier. Your copy of the bill of lading, signed by the carrier, is your proof of returning the axle.
The removed axle is to be shipped freight collect (Roadway if possible) to:
Saginaw/Buffalo Axle Plant 1 001 East Delavan Avenue Buffalo, NY 14240
Gear Lab Dave Frommann
To increase effectiveness of the program, the removed unit should be returned immediately. Failure to return the removed unit will result in the dealership being billed $1,500.00 for the unit furnished, plus an administration charge.
E. WARRANTY CLAIMS PROCESSING PROCEDURE: ---------------------------------------- Upon completion of the repair, a warranty claim is to be submitted to Chevrolet.

** The amount identified in the "Part Allowance" column above represents 30% of Dealer net price for parts used to replace the ring and pinion gears, since most axle noises are in that area. This is to be placed in the Net Amount (DMN) column of the claim.
YOUR COOPERATION IS GREATLY APPRECIATED. PROMPT RETURN OF YOUR CONCERNED UNIT WILL INCREASE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THIS PROGRAM. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS CONCERNING THE EXCHANGE PROGRAM ADMINISTRATIVE PROCEDURES, PLEASE CONTACT THE CHEVROLET TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE NETWORK, (TRANSMISSION-SERVICE MANUAL/BULLETIN GROUP).
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
