SUBJECT: CODE 22 THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR (TPS) OR LOW SPEED DRIVEABILITY (REPLACE TPS)

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1991 B, F AND D W/5.OL (VIN E) AND 5.7L (VIN 7)

APPLICATION: 1991 B and F car with 5.OL (VIN Code E) 1991 D car with 5.OL (VIN Code E) or 5.7L (VIN Code 7)

CONDITION:

---------- Some owners of 1991 B, D and F-cars with the 5.OL (VIN E) engine or D car with 5.7L (VIN Code 7) engine, may comment of a "Service Engine Soon" light or Low Speed Driveability. This may include a stored Code 22 Throttle Position Sensor (TPS), idle surge, low speed hesitation, or rough idle.

CAUSE:

------ Plastic mould flash on the internal contact pads causes incorrect TPS output.

CORRECTION:

----------- Follow the normal diagnostics found in section 6E2-A, 6E2-B and 6E2-C2 of the unit repair manual. If the replacement of the TPS is necessary, use kit part number #17112404. Do not use any TPS that is Julian Date coded prior to C1350. The Julian date of 135 represents May 15 (135th day of the year), and 0 represents the year 1990 (9=1989).

The Julian date is located on the TPS face, just below the Production part number. It can be identified without removing the TPS from the throttle body.

Use applicable labour operation and labour time taken from the Canadian Labour Time Guide.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
