General Motors of Canada Limited has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 1992 Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird model vehicles with 4L60 automatic transmissions (MD8). These vehicles exhibit a condition in which the shift control cable conduit may separate. These cable separations would prevent the transmission from being shifted into the proper position. For example, the vehicle may not be in park at the transmission with the shift lever in the park position or the transmission may be in drive or reverse with the vehicle shift lever in the neutral or park position. This condition may cause unexpected vehicle movement and could result in a vehicle crash without prior warning. To prevent the possibility of this condition occurring, dealers are to install a revised shift control cable.
Involved are CERTAIN 1992 Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird model vehicles with 4L60 automatic transmissions (MD8) built within the following VIN breakpoints:
PLANT YEAR MODEL PLANT CODE FROM THROUGH 1992 Chevrolet Camaro Van Nuys "L" NL128063 NLI67577 1992 Pontiac Firebird Van Nuys "L" NL212946 NL226654
All affected vehicles have been identified by the VIN listing provided to involved dealers with this bulletin. Any dealer not receiving a listing was not shipped any of the affected vehicles.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
