COOLANT LEAK AT ENGINE COOLANT HEATER ASSEMBLY

SUBJECT: COOLANT LEAK AT ENGINE COOLANT HEATER ASSEMBLY (CLEAN PLUG BORE, APPLY LUBRICANT, INSTALL NEW HEATER)

MODELS: 1995-96 CHEVROLET CAMARO 1995-96 PONTIAC FIREBIRD WITH 3800 SERIES II ENGINE (VIN K - RPO L36)

CONDITION:

SOME OWNERS MAY COMMENT ABOUT A COOLANT LEAK AND THE TECHNICIAN DETERMINES THE COOLANT LEAK ORIGINATES AT ENGINE COOLANT HEATER ASSEMBLY LOCATED ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE ENGINE.

CAUSE:

THE O-RING AROUND THE PERIMETER OF THE COOLANT HEATER MAY HAVE BEEN DAMAGED DURING INSTALLATION AT THE VEHICLE ASSEMBLY PLANT DUE TO INSUFFICIENT CLEANING OF THE PLUG BORE.

CORRECTION:

1. VERIFY THE COOLANT LEAK ORIGINATES AT THE COOLANT HEATER VIA VISUAL INSPECTION ON A HOIST. 2. DRAIN COOLANT FROM THE RADIATOR. 3. REMOVE COOLANT HEATER. 4. THOROUGHLY CLEAN THE PLUG BORE BY REMOVING ANY BURRS, SEALANT, COMPOUND, PAINT OR ROUGH SPOTS. 5. APPLY A COAT OF LUBRICANT, GM P/N 12377985 OR EQUIVALENT, TO THE O-RING AND MACHINED SURFACE OF THE BORE. 6. TUCK THE YOKE END OF THE HEATING COIL INTO THE INSIDE OF THE ENGINE BLOCK AND POSITION HEATER COIL SO THE ELECTRIC SOCKET FACES TOWARD THE FRONT OF THE ENGINE. 7. TORQUE BOLT TO 1.9 NM (17 LB. IN.). 8. REINSTALL COOLANT IN RADIATOR. 9. WARM ENGINE TO OPERATING TEMPERATURE AND VERIFY COOLANT LEAK HAS BEEN REPAIRED.
