General Information

The purpose of this bulletin is to provide information concerning the Chevrolet Camaro SS, Chevrolet Camaro RS, Pontiac Firebird Firehawk, Pontiac Firebird GT, SLP Engineering, and the standard and optional content of these vehicles. It also advises retail and wholesale service personnel of the warranty administration processes supporting these vehicles.

In 1996 and 1997, the Camaro SS was an aftermarket appearance/performance conversion offered by SLP Engineering to all Chevrolet dealers. Dealers ordered the conversion by signing a separate agreement with SLP Engineering and entering special processing option code R7T.

In 1998, Chevrolet incorporated some of the standard conversion package into an option available and warranted by General Motors. The process for ordering the current Camaro SS, option code WU8, is outlined in the Dealer Order Guide. Dealers/customers may still choose to purchase additional optional equipment through SLP Engineering, special processing option code Y2Y, by completing a separate SLP agreement provided to dealers under a separate cover letter.

The Pontiac Firebird Firehawk was started in 1996 as a ship-through program, RPO R6V, similar to the Camaro SS program, except through Pontiac dealers that signed agreements with SLP Engineering. In 1998, the RPO was changed to RPO WU6. No separate option is required as this is a catch-all option.

In 2001, General Motors approved two new V6 programs for SLP. These are the Chevrolet Camaro RS (RPO Y3B) and the Pontiac Firebird GT (RPO Y3C).

Except for the ordering and shipping accommodations, the dealer's agreement for the purchase of, payment for, and warranty coverage for specific SLP components are between the dealer and SLP and exclusive of Chevrolet Division, Pontiac Division and General Motors.

Camaro SS Standard Equipment and Associated VIN File Blocked Labor Operations 1996-1997

The Camaro SS is only available on the Camaro Z28 Coupe, 1FP87 or the Camaro Z28 Convertible, 1FP67 models. A file block has been initiated on the following labor operations as ALL 1996 and 1997 Camaro SS units had this portion of the conversion completed by SLP. For 1996 and 1997, the following components and the associated labor operations are warranted by SLP Engineering:

Listed below are the additional performance options available from SLP Engineering for the 1996 and 1997 Camaro SS. These options may be purchased separately or in combination. Many of the options will be evident based on the components used and due to the fact that replacement components must be procured from SLP Engineering. Dealers should continue to submit SLP warranty claims to SLP Engineering for 1996 and 1997 vehicles equipped with the following:

1998 Chevrolet Camaro SS

Chevrolet incorporated much of the standard Camaro SS content for 1998. The Camaro SS is only available on the Camaro Z28 Coupe, 1FP87 or the Camaro Z28 Convertible, 1FP67 models. Regular Production Option (RPO) WU8 is required. The following components are added to the Chevrolet window sticker content, and beginning with the 1998 model, are now warranted by Chevrolet Division:

Additional performance options available from SLP Engineering require RPO Y2Y in addition to the standard content. These options may be purchased separately or in combination. Many of the options will be evident based on the components used and due to the fact that replacement components must be procured from SLP Engineering. Dealers should continue to submit SLP warranty claims to SLP Engineering for 1998 vehicles equipped with the following:

1999 Chevrolet Camaro SS

A few additional refinements were added for 1999. Again, the SS is only available on the Camaro Z28 Coupe, 1FP87 or the Camaro Z28 Convertible, 1FP67 models. Regular Production Option (RPO) WU8 is required. The following components were included in the Chevrolet window sticker content and are warranted by Chevrolet Division:

2000 Chevrolet Camaro SS

For the 2000 model year, the Camaro SS was basically unchanged except the change from the 5-spoke painted wheel to the new 10-spoke wheel. Again, the SS is only available on the Camaro Z28 coupe, 1FP87 or the Camaro Z28 Convertible, 1FPS7 models. Regular Production Option (RPO) WU8 is required. The following components were included in the Chevrolet window sticker content and are warranted by Chevrolet Division.

SLP content remained the same except for the addition of a new chrome 10-spoke wheel option, in addition to the 5-spoke chrome wheel. Dealers should continue to submit SLP warranty claims for SLP Engineering for vehicles equipped with the following:

2001 Chevrolet Camaro SS

For the 2001 model year, the Camaro SS was again unchanged except the horsepower rating was increased to 325 HP. All other content remained the same. The following components were included in the Chevrolet window sticker content and are warranted by Chevrolet Division.

The SLP Y2Y options were changed slightly to include the items listed below. Dealers should continue to submit SLP warranty claims for SLP Engineering for vehicles equipped with the following:

2001 Chevrolet Camaro SS

Chevrolet introduced the 35th Anniversary Edition Camaro SS for the 2002 model year. This vehicle featured distinctive silver checkered flag stripes, black painted 10-spoke wheels with machined faces and special embroidered seats and side fender badges. These components were included in the Chevrolet window sticker content and are warranted by Chevrolet Division. SLP introduced a new airbox lid and Donaldson filter that raised the advertised horsepower to 345 when coupled with one of the optional SLP exhaust systems. All other content remained carryover. Dealers should continue to submit SLP warranty claims for SLP Engineering for vehicle equipment.

Camaro RS 2001 and 2002 Standard Equipment

SLP introduced the Camaro RS option as a two-sticker program in the 2001 model year. The option required Option Code Y3B. It was available on all Camaro V6 coupes, T-tops and convertibles. The Camaro RS is a ship-through program that SLP manufactures, markets and sells through the Chevrolet dealership network. All the content that is added by SLP is warranted by SLP for 36 months/36,000 miles (60,000 km).

The Firehawk was available on all models, coupes and convertibles, Trans Am and Formula. The Firebird Firehawk is a ship-through program that SLP manufactures, markets and sells through the Pontiac dealership network. The 2002 model year changes included making the 10th Anniversary available on all Trans Am coupe-based Firehawks and a new air cleaner top and airbox, raising the advertised horsepower of all Firehawks to 345 HP. The Firebird Firehawk is a ship-through program that SLP manufactures, markets and sells through the Pontiac dealership network. All the content that is added by SLP is warranted by SLP for 36 months/36,000 miles (60,000 km).

Carryover from the 2001 model year, except the optional 16" Firehawk style wheel has been replaced by the Pontiac production 16" Trans Am wheel.

Warranty Coverage

SLP components are covered by SLP for 36 months/36,000 miles (60,000 km) from the date of delivery to the retail purchaser or lessee. This includes emission related components related to the underhood forced air induction system.

SLP Warranty Process

At the introduction of this bulletin, dealers were advised that warranty repairs for SLP components are the responsibility of SLP. The following is the SLP warranty process:

Parts Shipment

SLP will pay parts expediting shipment costs for all parts EXCEPT for the SLP installed hood. When a SLP hood needs to be replaced under SLP's warranty, it will be shipped normal ground carrier.

Labor Time Guide

SLP will use the applicable GM Labor Time Guide as a source for determining the appropriate labor time amounts.

Part Allowance

SLP Engineering has agreed to a 5% parts handling allowance added to the total SLP part cost.

Towing

SLP will pay for towing if an SLP component failed causing the vehicle to be inoperable.

Alternate Transportation

SLP will pay a maximum of five days alternate transportation when an SLP component is the cause of the vehicle downtime. Any additional rental days must be pre-authorized by SLP.

Roadside Assistance

Owners will receive full Chevrolet Division or Pontiac Division Roadside Assistance privileges.

SLP Component Identification

In 1998, SLP Engineering began applying an optional equipment decal on the passenger side door frame.
