Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the serpentine belts from crankshaft pulley.
  3. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.
  4. Using 28 mm socket, remove the crankshaft harmonic balancer retaining bolt.
  5. Remove the crankshaft harmonic balancer using J 38197-A
  6. Remove the crankshaft position sensor shield. Do Not use a pry bar.

  7. Object Number: 12302  Size: SH
  8. Disconnect the sensor electrical connector.
  9. Remove the sensor from the block face.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 12303  Size: SH
  1. Position the Crankshaft Position Sensor onto the engine block face.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the bolts to hold the sensor to the engine block face.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten bolts to 20-40 N·m (14-28 lb ft).

  5. Position and install the Crankshaft Position Sensor Shield.
  6. Connect the electrical connector.
  7. Position the Balancer onto the Crankshaft.
  8. Apply thread sealer GM P/N 1052080 or equivalent to threads of Crankshaft Balancer bolt.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten bolt to 150 N·m +76 degrees (110 lb ft) +76 degrees.

  10. Lower the vehicle from the hoist.
  11. Install the Serpentine accessory drive belt.
  12. Connect the negative battery cable.
