  1. Remove the reverse idler shaft bracket bolts.

  2. Object Number: 38378  Size: SH
  3. Remove the following parts:
  4. 2.1. The reverse idler gear thrust washer
    2.2. The reverse idler gear
    2.3. The roller bearing
    2.4. The thrust washer
    2.5. The reverse idler shaft

  5. Remove the following parts:
  6. 3.1. The countershaft extension bearing race
    3.2. The shim
    3.3. The funnel

  7. Remove the following parts:
  8. 4.1. The reverse lockout assembly bolt.
    4.2. The reverse lockout assembly

    Object Number: 38384  Size: SH
  9. Remove the reverse lockout solenoid from the reverse lockout body. Use the J 41099 .
  10. Caution: The reverse lockout assembly is under spring pressure. Exercise caution when removing the retainer ring, as bodily injury may result.

  11. Disassemble the reverse lockout assembly in the following sequence:

    6.2. Remove the O-ring (16) from the body (8).
    6.3. Remove the retainer ring (2) from the body (8).
    6.4. Remove the reverse lockout inner spring (7).
    6.5. Compress the reverse lockout plunger (3) and the collar (5) in a vise and remove the retainer ring (6).
    6.6. Remove the reverse lockout plunger (3).
    6.7. Remove the reverse lockout outer spring (4).
    6.8. Remove the reverse lockout collar (5).

  13. Remove the following parts:
  14. 7.1. The vehicle speed sensor bolt
    7.2. The vehicle speed sensor and the clamp
    7.3. The O-ring seal from the vehicle speed sensor

  15. Remove the rear seal and the boot (Pry out the seal and the boot with a suitable tool).

  16. Object Number: 38401  Size: SH
  17. Remove the mainshaft bearing race retainer ring.
  18. Important: Do not replace the bearing race unless inspection shows bearing race damage.


    Object Number: 38391  Size: SH
  19. Remove the mainshaft bearing race. Use the J 8092 and the J 39789 .
  20. Important: Do not replace the bushing unless inspection shows bushing damage.


    Object Number: 38393  Size: SH
  21. Remove the shift shaft bushing. Use the J 36190 and the J 39439-1 .

Tools Required

    • J 26941 Bearing Race Remover
    • J 23907 Slide Hammer

  1. Remove the reverse idler shaft bracket bolts.
  2. Remove the bracket.

  3. Object Number: 105688  Size: SH
  4. Remove the following parts in order:
  5. 3.1. The reverse idler gear
    3.2. The roller bearing
    3.3. The reverse idler shaft

    Object Number: 38379  Size: SH
  6. Remove the following parts in order:
  7. 4.1. The countershaft extension bearing race
    4.2. The shim
    4.3. The funnel
    4.4. Remove the outer and inner output shaft seals (pry out the seals with a suitable tool).

    Object Number: 388476  Size: SH
  8. Remove the mainshaft bearing race retainer ring.
  9. Important: Do not replace the bearing race unless inspection shows bearing race damage.

  10. Remove the mainshaft bearing race using the J 26941 and the J 23907 .
