Starter Replacement 5.7L V8

Removal Procedure

Important: This vehicle was designed for starter mounting without shims. However, if single or double shims have been added to correct a noise or engagement condition, reinstall the shims in their original location to ensure proper pinion-to-flywheel engagement.

  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the left side oxidation catalytic converter. Refer to Oxidation Catalytic Converter Replacement
  3. in Engine Exhaust.

  4. Remove the starter motor bolts.
  5. Lower the starter motor.

  6. Object Number: 211617  Size: SH
  7. Remove the engine wiring harness starter lead nut.

  8. Object Number: 211595  Size: SH
  9. Remove the positive battery cable to starter motor nut (3).
  10. Remove the starter motor.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 211595  Size: SH
  1. Install the starter motor.
  2. Install the positive battery cable to starter motor nut (3).
  3. Tighten
    Tighten the positive battery cable to starter motor nut (3) to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  4. Install the engine wiring harness starter lead nut.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the engine wiring harness starter lead nut to 2 N·m (18 lb in).

  6. Raise the starter motor.

  7. Object Number: 211621  Size: SH
  8. Install the starter motor bolts.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the starter motor bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  10. Install the left side oxidation catalytic converter. Refer to Oxidation Catalytic Converter Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  11. Lower the vehicle.

Starter Replacement 3.8L V6

Removal Procedure

Important: This vehicle was designed for starter mounting without shims. However, if single or double shims have been added to correct a noise or engagement condition, reinstall the shims in their original location to ensure proper pinion-to-flywheel engagement.

  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the starter shield. Refer to Starter Shield Replacement .

  3. Object Number: 43571  Size: SH
  4. Remove the starter motor bolt.
  5. Remove the starter motor stud.
  6. Lower the starter motor.

  7. Object Number: 211604  Size: SH
  8. Remove the positive cable to starter nut (1).
  9. Remove the positive cable.

  10. Object Number: 211623  Size: SH
  11. Remove the starter motor lead nut from the starter.
  12. Remove the starter motor lead.
  13. Remove the starter motor.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the starter motor.

  2. Object Number: 211623  Size: SH
  3. Install the starter motor lead to the starter.
  4. Install the starter motor lead nut.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the starter motor lead nut to 2 N·m (17 lb in).


    Object Number: 211604  Size: SH
  6. Install the positive cable.
  7. Install the positive cable to starter nut (1).
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the positive cable to starter nut (1) to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  9. Raise the starter motor.

  10. Object Number: 43571  Size: SH
  11. Install the starter motor bolt.
  12. Tighten
    The bolt to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).

  13. Install the starter motor stud.
  14. Tighten
    The starter motor stud to 45 N·m (33 lb ft).

  15. Install the starter shield. Refer to Starter Shield Replacement .
