Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement 3.8L

Tools Required

J 39400-A Halogen Leak Detector

Removal Procedure

Important: Compressor related noise is generally A/C system related and not always caused by the compressor itself. Prior to replacing compressor, refer to Air Conditioning (A/C) System Performance Test .


    Object Number: 365420  Size: SH
  1. Recover the refrigerant. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .
  2. Remove the serpentine drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 3.8 L.
  3. Disconnect the electrical connector from the A/C compressor.

  5. Remove the negative battery cable nut and cable from the engine block .
  6. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.

  7. Object Number: 569444  Size: SH
  8. Remove the A/C compressor hose assembly bolt.
  9. Remove the A/C compressor hose assembly.
  10. Discard the sealing washers.

  11. Object Number: 365440  Size: SH
  12. Remove the A/C compressor rear bolts (2, 3).

  13. Object Number: 282953  Size: SH
  14. Remove the A/C compressor bolts.
  15. Remove the A/C compressor.

Installation Procedure

    Important: New A/C compressors are shipped WITHOUT poly-alkylene glycol (PAG) oil.

  1. If a new A/C compressor is being installed, add the proper amount of PAG oil to the compressor. Refer to Refrigerant System Capacities .
  2. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  3. If reinstalling the old A/C compressor perform the following:
  4. 2.1. Drain, measure and record the amount of PAG oil from both the suction and discharge ports and the crankcase in the A/C compressor.
    2.2. Add the proper amount of PAG oil to the compressor. Refer to Refrigerant System Capacities .
    2.3. Install the compressor crankcase oil drain bolt to the replacement compressor.

    Tighten
    Tighten the compressor crankcase oil drain bolt to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

  5. Install the A/C compressor.
  6. Install the front A/C compressor bolts.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the front A/C compressor bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  8. Install the A/C compressor rear bolts (2, 3).
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the A/C compressor rear bolts (2, 3) to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).

  10. Install the new sealing washers.
  11. Install the A/C compressor hose assembly.
  12. Install the A/C compressor hose assembly bolt.
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the A/C compressor hose assembly bolt to 33 N·m (24 lb ft).

  14. Lower the vehicle.

  16. Install the negative battery cable and nut to the engine block.
  17. Tighten
    Tighten the negative battery cable to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  18. Connect the electrical connector to the A/C compressor.
  19. Install the serpentine drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 3.8L.
  20. Evacuate and charge the refrigerant system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .
  21. Leak test the fittings of the component using the J 39400-A .

Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement 5.7L

Removal Procedure

Important: Compressor related noise is generally A/C system related and not always the compressor itself. Prior to replacing the compressor, refer to Noise Diagnosis - Air Conditioning (A/C) System .


    Object Number: 365448  Size: SH
  1. Recover the refrigerant. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .
  2. Remove the A/C drive belt. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor Belt Replacement
  3. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  4. Remove the A/C compressor hose assembly bolt.
  5. Remove the A/C compressor hose assembly.
  6. Discard the sealing washers.

  8. Remove the transmission oil cooler pipes from the engine bracket, if necessary.

  9. Object Number: 365446  Size: SH
  10. Disconnect the electrical connector from the A/C compressor.

  11. Object Number: 282955  Size: SH
  12. Remove the A/C compressor bolts.
  13. Remove the A/C compressor.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 282955  Size: SH

    Important: New A/C compressors are shipped WITHOUT poly-alkylene glycol (PAG) oil.

  1. If a new A/C compressor is being installed, add the proper amount of PAG oil to the compressor. Refer to Refrigerant System Capacities .
  2. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  3. If reinstalling the OLD A/C compressor perform the following:
  4. 2.1. Drain, measure and record the amount of PAG oil from both the suction and discharge ports and the crankcase, from the compressor.
    2.2. Add the proper amount of PAG oil. Refer to Refrigerant System Capacities .
    2.3. Install the compressor crankcase oil drain bolt (1) to the replacement compressor.

    Tighten
    Tighten the compressor crankcase oil drain bolt  (1) to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

  5. Install the A/C compressor.
  6. Install the A/C compressor bolts.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the A/C compressor bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  8. Connect the electrical connector to the A/C compressor.

  9. Object Number: 208334  Size: SH
  10. Install the transmission oil cooler pipes to the engine bracket, if necessary.

  11. Object Number: 365448  Size: SH
  12. Install the new sealing washers.
  13. Install the A/C compressor hose assembly.
  14. Install the A/C compressor hose assembly bolt.
  15. Tighten
    Tighten the A/C compressor hose assembly bolt to 33 N·m (24 lb ft).

  16. Lower the vehicle.
  17. Install the serpentine drive belt. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor Belt Replacement .
  18. Evacuate and charge the refrigerant system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .
  19. Leak test the fittings of the component using the J 39400-A .
