Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 423439  Size: SH
  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  3. Remove the wheel hub and bearing from the steering knuckle. Refer to Front Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement .
  4. Remove and discard the cotter pin (3) from the outer tie rod end (1).
  5. Remove the outer tie rod end nut (2).

  7. Using J 24319-B separate the outer tie rod end from the steering knuckle.
  8. Use a jack stand to support the lower control arm.
  9. Remove the shock absorber lower bolts and nuts.
  10. Remove and discard the upper control arm cotter pin.
  11. Remove the upper control arm nut.

  13. Using J 39549 separate the upper ball joint (1) from the steering knuckle (3).
  14. Remove the upper ball joint (1) from the steering knuckle (3).

  15. Object Number: 181096  Size: MH
  16. Remove and discard the lower ball joint cotter pin.
  17. Remove the lower ball joint nut.
  18. Using J 39549 separate the lower ball joint (7) from the steering knuckle (5).
  19. Remove the lower ball joint (7) from the steering knuckle (5).
  20. Remove the steering knuckle (5) from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the steering knuckle (5) to the vehicle.
  2. Align and Install the lower ball joint (7) to the steering knuckle (5).
  3. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Install the lower ball joint nut.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the lower ball joint nut to 110 N·m (81 lb ft).

    Important: Never loosen the ball joint nut in order to align the cotter pin bolt. You may over-torque the ball joint nut up to 1/6 of a turn.

  6. Install a new lower ball joint cotter pin.
  7. Align and install the upper ball joint to the steering knuckle.
  8. Install the upper ball joint nut.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the upper ball joint nut to 53 N·m (39 lb ft).

  10. Install a new upper ball joint cotter pin.
  11. Install the shock absorber lower bolts and nuts.
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the shock absorber lower bolts or nuts to 65 N·m (48 lb ft).

  13. Remove the jack stand supporting the lower control arm.
  14. Connect the outer tie rod end to the steering knuckle.
  15. Install the outer tie rod end nut (2).
  16. Tighten
    Tighten the outer tie rod end nut to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).

  17. Install a new cotter pin (3) to the outer tie rod end (1).
  18. Install the wheel hub and bearing (4) from the steering knuckle (1). Refer to Front Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement .
  19. Install the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  20. Lower the vehicle.
