Removal Procedure
- Raise and support the
vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Clean all of the dirt from the area of the rear axle housing cover
before removing the cover.
- Remove the following components:
• | The rear axle housing cover bolts |
• | The parking brake cable guides |
- Place a drain pan under the differential cover.
- Carefully pry the rear axle housing cover loose, and remove the
rear axle housing cover.
- Allow lubricant to drain.
- Remove the rear axle housing cover gasket.
- Clean the gasket sealing surfaces of the cover and the differential
housing with denatured alcohol, or equivalent.
Installation Procedure
- Install a new rear axle
housing cover gasket.
- Install the rear axle housing cover.
- Install the park brake cable guides.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the rear
axle housing cover bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the rear axle housing cover bolts in a cross pattern to 30 N·m
(22 lb ft).
- Refill rear axle with lubricant. Refer to
Lubricant Level Check
.
- Lower the vehicle.
