Diagnostic Aids

You cannot properly service a clutch until you know what is wrong with it. In many instances when you can not select gears can be a result of a faulty internal parts of the transmission or a faulty clutch master cylinder.

Test Description

The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.

  1. This step explains there parts and the operation of the clutch system.

  2. This step inspects for a faulty concentric slave cylinder.

  3. This step checks for problems in the transmission.

Inspect the clutch system for proper operation. Refer to Symptoms - Clutch .

Check the master cylinder.

Is the master cylinder worn or faulty?

Replace the clutch master cylinder. Refer to Clutch Master Cylinder Replacement .

Inspect the sift tower for binding or damage.

Is there binding or damage?

Repair or replace the shift tower as necessary.

  1. Remove the transmission. Refer to Transmission Replacement in Manual Transmission - M49 or Transmission Replacement in Manual Transmission - MM6.
  2. Inspect for worn or damage to the internal components.
